Proper Use Of Title "Apostle"

Members of the Quorum of the Twelve are apostles; however, I notice they are almost always referred to as elders. For example, in introducing a member of the Twelve, the person doing the introducing will refer to him as "Elder ______." Also, articles written by members of the Twelve typically carry the byline "Elder ____ ________." When is it appropriate to use the title "apostle" when referring to a member of the Twelve? Is it ever wrong to refer to a member of the Twelve as "elder"?

I just say Elder J. Cheever Loophole a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, or Elder Otis P. Driftwood, one of the Apostles and I have heard older people say Apostle Hammer or whatever the case may be

In Sunday School I would always apply the term Apostle or Prophet to the dead, and Elder to the living in be correct in nomenclature.

Peter refers to himself as the First Elder in scripture...so maybe that's the precedent?

I feel it's kind of like the title "King" or "Queen" among the monarchies of the world. It's a title that they hold, but when referring to them directly or formally you say "Your Majesty" or "Your Grace."

I've been taught that the term is one that is solemn and not to be thrown around lightly. Hence the addressing as Elder.

My understanding is that 'apostle' is an office not a title. Elder is both a title and an office, but we do not call missionaries 'elder' because they hold the office of an elder, but rather, because of their authority endowed by holding the Melchizedek priesthood. For example, we do not call the 1st counsellor in the Bishopric 'High Priest Jones'.

We use the following terms: Elder, Bishop and President. These are titles that state authority. A Bishop is not a bishop because he is a bishop in the Aaronic priesthood.

I noticed in D&C 20, there were originally 4 priesthood offices, and only 1 belonged to the higher priesthood (ie. Elder). So, in my view (which could be completely wrong) once you hold the Melchizedek Priesthood you're an Elder (by title), all others are only Offices not titles [JS History 1:72].

In the RLDS tradition they say:

Apostle Fred Bloggs

Seventy Jim Smith

Elder Sandra Jones

Priest Joe Taylor ...........etc

These titles apply to anyone who holds that priesthood office, not just general authorities.
