Stone holm, on 14 August 2013 - 07:10 PM, said: The mental health argument is one that just leads into a quagmire. There are those who are pushing for religious fundamentalism to be considered a mental health issue. The next step would land Mormons in the category.

Over religiousity is already a mental health issue. IE; When someone really believes they are Jesus the Christ(delusional), or when they use their religious rights to infringe on the religious rights of others(usually called a sociopath).

Well to take the other side of this. I wrote to the Brethren back in the early 80's expressing concern that parents were getting Court orders to have their grown children who had become Mooneys de-brainwashed. I expressed concern that some Christian Fundamentalists might decide that could work on Mormon converts as well. The Church replied that the Brethren had not yet taken a stance on the issue. Guess they were waiting to see if people started coming after our converts as well. How did that saying go, "First they came after......by the time they came after me there was no one else to call upon..."

Yeah, sorry, I made a mistake about that. Technically I do have a "mental illness", and yeah, I do consider myself to have it (not that I really consider it an illness), so yeah, it was a mistake.

No harm, no foul.

Who could be for kidnapping, physical isolation, and mental coersion like that employed by the so called Deprogramers? I don't know of any case involving the Mormons. That doesn't mean it didn't happen either. IMNTBHO they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

I didn't say it happened, the point was such actions being taken against adult Moony converts could be brought against Mormon converts if this type of action was allowed to persist.

Card shares a few more of his views, potentially further stirring the pot (which is, of course, within his right to say...)

Ender's Game' author compares Obama to Hitler

RICHARD FOREMAN / SUMMIT

August 15, 2013, 12:13 p.m.

Orson Scott Card, the “Ender’s Game” novelist who ignited a firestorm over his comments about gay marriage, has written a paranoid essay comparing President Obama to Hitler in which he suggests Obama could be planning a coup to take over the United States.

In a post on his Civilization Watch blog called “Unlikely Events,” Card lays out a conspiracy-laden rant saying Obama wants to take over the country via a national police force driving around in armored cars — “thugs who will do his bidding without any reference to law” — and that Michelle Obama will be anointed to succeed him until “the Constitution will have been amended to allow Presidents to run for reelection forever.”

Card prefaces his essay by saying that as a science-fiction writer his job is to “make impossible events seem not just possible but likely. Inevitable. “

He adds that “in predicting the future, we are bound by the same rules of plausibility that bind fiction writers, yet we must also respect the rules of evidence that bind historians.”

And while at the essay’s conclusion Card writes, “We don't seriously think any such thing will happen,” he immediately changes course, saying, “But if we learn anything from history, it's this: Anything can happen."

Over the course of some 3,000 words, he attacks Obama (who has the help of a willing accomplice with the news media) as being a dictator who has no interest in defending the country. And much worse.

Among Card’s more controversial statements:

“Having been anointed from the start of his career because he was that magical combination — a black man who talks like a white man (that's what they mean by calling him ‘articulate’ and a ‘great speaker’) — he has never had to work for a living, and he has never had to struggle to accomplish goals. He despises ordinary people, is hostile to any religion that doesn't have Obama as its deity, and his contempt for the military is complete.” “Obama already acts as if the Constitution were just for show. Like Augustus, he pretends to govern within its framework, but in fact he treats it with contempt.” “And you can be sure that those unionized teachers who spewed venom and hatred in Wisconsin will be ready to brainwash America's children about the glories of Obama-style ‘freedom.’ Any teachers who don't follow the union program will be fired.” “Obama is, by character and preference, a dictator. He hates the very idea of compromise; he demonizes his critics and despises even his own toadies in the liberal press. He circumvented Congress as soon as he got into office by appointing ‘czars’ who didn't need Senate approval.”

Last month, trying to impede a boycott of its “Ender’s Game” movie sparked by Card’s anti-gay-marriage remarks, Lionsgate issued a statement distancing itself from the novelist. The studio also said it will host an “Ender’s Game” benefit for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community.

Set for release Nov. 1, the sci-fi story adapts Card’s 1985 novel, set in a near future in which an alien race known as the Formics have attacked Earth. The movie stars Asa Butterfield as Andrew “Ender” Wiggin, a bright boy recruited to help humanity face future threats, and is directed by Gavin Hood (“X-Men Origins: Wolverine”).

Card’s earlier remarks about the Supreme Court’s ruling in the Defense of Marriage Act prompted the gay rights organization Geeks Out to call for a boycott of “Ender’s Game.”

“However much you may have admired his books, keep your money out of Orson Scott Card’s pockets,” the group said.

In its July statement, Lionsgate said, “As proud longtime supporters of the LGBT community, champions of films ranging from ‘Gods and Monsters’ to ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’ and a company that is proud to have recognized same-sex unions and domestic partnerships within its employee benefits policies for many years, we obviously do not agree with the personal views of Orson Scott Card and those of the National Organization for Marriage.”

At the same time, the studio asked that moviegoers not conflate the politics of Card, who is a producer of “Ender’s Game,” with the movie itself.

The studio declined to comment further Thursday about Card’s latest essay.

And here:

Antigay Author Orson Scott Card Attacks Obama, Compares Him To Hitler And Putin

Apparently unsatisfied with merely receiving the intense scorn of LGBT people and their allies for this virulently antigay stance and provoking a planned boycott of the upcoming film adaptation of his novel Ender’s Game, conservative author Orson Scott Card has now lobbed accusations at President Obama, comparing him to Adolph Hitler and Vladimir Putin.

On his blog Civilization Watch, Card has taken the president to task for being as, he sees it, unwilling to stand up to Muslim dictators hellbent on harming America. He referred to Obama as a “dictator” who “acts as if the Constitution were just for show.”

“Like Augustus Caesar, Napoleon Bonaparte, Adolph Hitler, and Vladimir Putin, Barack Obama could become lifetime dictator without any serious internal opposition,” the author wrote.

Card continued his conspiracy-heavy tirade by adding, “Obama is, by character and preference, a dictator. He hates the very idea of compromise; he demonizes his critics and despises even his own toadies in the liberal press. He circumvented Congress as soon as he got into office by appointing ‘czars’ who didn’t need Senate approval.”

Naturally, he points a finger at the news media, claiming that they have “never challenged Obama on anything.”

And adding a racist slant to his rant, Card refers to the president as “a black man who talks like a white man (that’s what they mean by calling him ‘articulate’ and a ‘great speaker’).”

It will be interesting to see how Lionsgate, the studio releasing Ender’s Game in November and which issued a statement in support of LGBT rights, will be able to distance itself and the film from Card’s latest controversy.

Wow.  OSC continues to disappoint me.  For a man who writes brilliant books, he is a bit messed up when it comes to public comment.

I don't buy his "I make it sound plausible".  His idea about a national police where Obama hires gang members to go around and beat up people...yeah, right.  Look how long it took to get national databases for the police and I believe we are still way short of being totally effective in covering all the needs in that area.

What country with a history of democracy as established as this one has ever gone the dictator route (even if one assumes that is what Obama would like to do which is ridiculous in my view even if he is autocratic in some ways in my opinion...and this is not always a bad quality in a president, at times one needs to have a leader strong enough to stand on his own though I will be open about me not being happy with the way Obama has chosen to do it so far, I am just saying I am not trashing him by describing him that way, just saying that it is too huge of a step from what Obama is doing now to what Card is claiming he wants to do)?

So, does the old saying "all publicity is good publicity" still apply to the Ender's Game movie?

For the record, I'm still planning to see the movie and will still encourage my kids to read his books.  I also like that there will be an Ender's Game benefit, hosted by the studio, for the LGBT community.  I wonder if OSC will attend.  :)

It always amazes me in psychic powers of some individuals to read the unexpressed thoughts of others to foretell the future. Now if they just let me know the Mondays' closing Stock numbers of the NYSE. ;)
