Dc 101:1-5-Are To Be Tried As Abraham?

1 Verily I say unto you, concerning your brethren who have been afflicted, and persecuted, and cast out from the land of their inheritance—

2 I, the Lord, have suffered the affliction to come upon them, wherewith they have been afflicted, in consequence of their transgressions;

3 Yet I will own them, and they shall be mine in that day when I shall come to make up my jewels.

4 Therefore, they must needs be chastened and tried, even as Abraham, who was commanded to offer up his only son.

5 For all those who will not endure chastening, but deny me, cannot be sanctified.

Do you think we are to be tried as Abraham was in our life? willing to sacrifice but ultimately didn't have to go through with it

I believe so, and in a couple of ways (just from my personal experience):

1. Enduring a trial not imagined beforehand.

2. Deciding on taking one route, praying about it, and getting a different course that required greater endurance (but in the end, less sacrifice*).

The idea is that we do whatever the Lord wants us to do.

* Sometimes what we consider a great sacrifice to us is actually a greater and unwarranted imposed sacrifice upon others, and only God can see this.

I do not believe that in every such test a ram will be found in a nearby thicket.

I am told by those who have raised teenagers that it is hard not to think that Abraham may have had an ulterior motive.

Yes.

I take the approach of "tried as Abraham" as being relative to ones own circumstance and station in life. The Book of Mormon teaches that a willing heart is guiltless.

People usually think of the endowment as what is necessary for eternal life.

But, as I understand it, the endowment is a pattern to show us how our covenant life will and must play out in order to create/ receive eternal life. I.e. the actual endowment is in real, daily life, not in the temple, but we receive the keys for this LIFE endowment in the temple endowment. (keys = so that we can understand, for one thing; may be other reasons)

The temple endowment as we now have it portrays the very first portion of Genesis. But if you continue in the Old Testament, you see more keys that allow you to progress in your life and in the covenant and prepare for eternal life. The sacrifice of Abraham/Isaac/Sarah is one of those portrayals

Yes, all those who prepare for the celestial kingdom will experience a/the trial of Abraham/Isaac.

Also, on another level, to come to this earth IS the trial of Isaac. We have been bound on the altar (the earth is the altar). So it seems we have been sacrificed. Except that we are freed through the blood of the Lamb/Ram.
