blackstrap Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 Hugh Nibley has said that there are only two things that humans can and should be good at. That is repenting and forgiving. Both of these require a healthy dose of a broken heart and contrite spirit.Do a broken heart and a contrite spirt come only by the grace of God or do they come by the grace of God after all we can do ?
ERayR Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 Paul and James are not at odds. Eph. 2:8-9 is 100% correct. James tells us that our faith motivates us to do good works otherwise it is dead. But the things we do don't save us. They never have and they never will. James argues against complacency and I agree with him. But as I said, there is nothing we can do to earn or merit salvation. Works are expressions of faith.Point out in my posts where I have said that our works save us. Again I point out Mosiah 2:21 in the BoM. What I am pointing out is that both are necessary. I will be the first to admit that a lot of LDS members misconstrue the "...after all we can do" phrase. 1
Damien the Leper Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 I think we're talking past each other. I don't believe in confession faith in an overly simplistic way. Faith is a work in progress, a deep spiritual journey.Faith should, I hope, inspire us to do good deeds. But those deeds don't save us. The works, as Ray and I have both said, perfects our faith. 1

I honestly think I am misunderstanding you. I apologize.
Bill “Papa” Lee Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 Salvation is attained by faith. The Bible makes that explicitly clear. The D&C and BoM do not correct the Bible.Examples?
thesometimesaint Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 Show me what you do and I'll know what you believe.
paulplonski Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Examples?FYI - Theo1689's name is Jeff Shirton. He is a science teacher at an adult learning center in Canada. Google it and you will find a long history of mean and petty squabbling on forums. He is indescriminate in his hate - Arminians, Mormons, JW's, and even folks that share common interests with him. Apparently this activity fills a wretched hole in the life of a pathetic little man.
altersteve Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Salvation is attained by faith. The Bible makes that explicitly clear. The D&C and BoM do not correct the Bible.Nor do they claim to. They expand on it.
altersteve Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Yes, the Bible makes it explicitly clear that salvation is attained by faith. I don't disagree with that.
rodheadlee Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 What makes us want to be members (my wife and I) is the fact that the Holy Spirit called us to join. Then the Holy Spirit told us about the ordinance of eternal marriage. We are working towards that goal of being married for all eternity. I love the scriptures made available by members of the Church, namely Joseph Smith. The Book of Abraham and the Book of Moses are fantastic scriptures. I really like the Book of Mormon. The Doctine and Covenants bring a lot of new knowledge.
