Church'S View Of Apocrypha / Pseudepigrapha?

Hi,

I wondered what the Church's view is on the the Apocrypha / Pseudepigrapha?

Likewise I'm interested in your own opinions too :)

I studied both at Bible college and found them very interesting and some of them spiritually uplifting (Sirach and Wisdom of Solomon esp). I think I'm right in thinking baptism for dead is mentioned in II Maccabbess?

I imagine they are thought of as helpful but not doctrinally binding.

1 Verily, thus saith the Lord unto you concerning theApocrypha—There are many things contained therein that are true, and it is mostly translated correctly;

2 There are many things contained therein that are not true, which are interpolations by the hands of men.

3 Verily, I say unto you, that it is not needful that the Apocryphashould be translated.

4 Therefore, whoso readeth it, let him understand, for the Spirit manifesteth truth;

5 And whoso is enlightened by the Spirit shall obtain benefit therefrom;

6 And whoso receiveth not by the Spirit, cannot be benefited. Therefore it is not needful that it should be translated. Amen.

And if something is not there, just search the lds.org site. If you don't like their search machine, I use "site:lds.org" with google and then whatever search terms I am interested in when I do my searches as that tends to give me more information on what is being said.

wow!

I'm liking the LDS, Can see why God has lead me here :)

Thanks Calmoriah - I hadn't even thought to do a search of D&C - will do so before posting other questions.

Antoni, I wish you well on your search and journey. If I may... here's another great commentary on how to distinguish truth by the spirit. It's in the last few pages of the Book of Mormon, Moroni Chapter 7.

Incidentally, as far as I know, the apocrypha has been quoted at least 3 times in general conference. We Mormons tend to take truth from whatever source it comes. Truth isn't just limited to us or our scriptures.

I like the Apocrypha as there is much to learn from it. I thought a certain part of Sirach (Ecclesiasticus) was kinda disturbing when a man who was cut open pulled out his own intestines and threw them at his attackers. I probably have the details wrong so...Maklelan, Robert Smith, and Volg...please correct me if I'm wrong.

Welcome back.

The death of Razis, a botched suicide, then a defiant gesture, rather than be captured by Nicanor's troops. 2 Maccabees 17:37-46.

I still think one of my favorites from the Apocrypha is from Pistis Sophia, where the angel gives the soul a "cup of forgetfulness" and "deliver it unto a body which will spend its time being afflicted."

Truth is one eternal round.

I don't know what all is designated by Apocrypha/Pseudepigrapha. It probably includes a mix of canonical and non-canonical documents. According to my faith, 2 Maccabees is inspired Scripture. I don't think we would designate it with those words. You are probably thinking of 12:46:

It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins.

I think that there is a lot of cool stuff in apocryphal books (not just the Apocrypha with a capital A). I especially enjoy reading early Christian writings like the Didache and the Secret Gospel of Mark. You can read a lot of that stuff here if your interested.

I think I shocked my tutors when I was at an evangelical bible college and found my Intertestmental Literature module one of the most fulfilling intelectually and spiritually :)

I personally love The Wisdom of Solomon and I like the additions to Daniel.

The additions to the book of Esther do make me smile though, as it appears to me to have been written by someone that's realised Esther doesn't mention God and so they've written a few extra chapters that mention God repeatedly.

The Pseudepigrapha is a bit more hard work in places, I've not read it in years but will heave the two volumes off their shelf and start to read them again. It'll be interesting to read them now from the position I'm now in.

Thanks for the link above Sevenbak.

A Jewish-Arab midrash turned folktale has also been quoted recently in general conference.

"Woo-hoo-hoo. Look who knows so much. Well it just so happens that your book here is only is only mostly translated correctly."
