Gotta love the calling evil "good, and "good", evil nature of the post.

Of course, Daniel2 never truly fails in that regard.

Thanks--in light of our divergent approaches on this issue, I consider the fact that I 'never fail in this regard' a compliment. ;)

The facts, unfortunately, do not support such an optimistic future for LGBT advocates.

Though I obviously hold a different opinion on the optimisim for LGBT advocacy, the reality is that it isn't worth arguing over something that only time will tell which viewpoint eventually yields fruit.

Why do you always have to personalize your arguments, Selek?? (And, I realize I am doing the same thing by calling you out, but really...why not just make your argument without being so personally denigrating and rude towards other posters?)

Did anyone notice that one of the actors is the same guy that played one of the missionaries in the BOM broadway play? Maybe that was a reason also, even though its doubtful.

I want a bumper sticker that reads: "Bumper stickers are for wimps and commies."

Hey! Stop that! We socialists aren't that bad.

I had a bumper sticker on my first car back in high school that said "Don't drink and park. Accidents cause people." Oh how I miss that car...

Did ksl say why it wasn't going to run it? Maybe it was because the church doesn't support surrogacy.

It's because the show is supposedly very, very crude.

It's because the show is supposedly very, very crude.

Here is a quote from the spokesperson that presented reasons KSL might not air a show:'"After viewing the pilot episode of The New Normal, we have made the decision to keep it off our fall schedule," Jeff Simpson, CEO of KSL's parent company Bonneville International, said in a statement.

For our brand, this program simply feels inappropriate on several dimensions, especially during family viewing time."

Speaking with The Salt Lake Tribune, he added: "From time to time we may struggle with content that crosses the line in one area or another. The dialogue might be excessively rude and crude. The scenes may be too explicit or the characterizations might seem offensive." '

Some of the dialogue may be very very crude. but it seems that the show in many areas crosses the line that KSL on standards that KSL has set.

In an additional odd TV/gay/LDS twist (on another primetime network), the creator of Modern Family (a show that features an extendedly-related American family, including an intergenerational bi-national couple, a loveably eccentric 'typical' American heterosexual couple, and a gay character and his partner, all of whom are raising children) just invited Ann Romney to guest-star on their show:

'Modern Family' creator invites Ann Romney on show as gay wedding officiant

Peter Stone / ABC

Ann Romney might be gearing up for her role as potential first lady, but she might also wanna prep for another one: TV star. Mitt Romney's 63-year-old missus openly professed her love for "Modern Family" to Entertainment Tonight, and now its creator, Steve Levitan, has offered her a spot on the show -- while slyly taking dig at her husband's anti-gay-marriage stance.

The showrunner took to Twitter yesterday and wrote: "Thrilled Ann Romney says ModFam is her favorite show. We'll offer her the role of officiant at Mitch & Cam's wedding. As soon as it's legal."

Now there's a canny casting stunt for TV sweeps week!

Levitan, of course, was clearly taking swipe at the Republican presidential candidate, who's been a vocal opponent of gay marriage.

While on the campaign trail in Oklahoma City in May, he told reporters, "I have the same view on marriage that I had when I was governor. I believe marriage is a relationship between a man and a woman."

Levitan's tongue-in-cheek offer arrived on the eve of Ann's well-received speechat the Republic National Convention Tuesday, in which she created a warm image of Mitt while saluting the nation's women.

Levitan, meanwhile, has already had his hands full dealing with his "Modern Family" cast amid salary squabbles, rehearsal holdoutsand lawsuit threats.

Even the show's young stars have gotten in on the action, reportedly scoring $70,000-per-episode paydays.

Hey, maybe Ann Romney won't play so hardball!

Insightful, as always. ;)

Was KSL within it's right? Of course. Was it wise...?

Every time an item like this about gays, gay marriage, etc. comes up in the news here in Utah as my kids and I are watching, I always marvel that for all the noise about "children being indoctrinated about the gay agenda," it sure seems like those that aggressively oppose gay rights seem to bring a lot of attention to the issue and kids are exposed even more.

It does seem like an impossible double-bind for anyone hoping to oppose growing acceptence of gay and lesbian relationships--a) do nothing, and gay relationships receive attention and become mainstream; or b) actively oppose--and gay and lesbian reliationships receive even more attention and still become more mainstream.

I'm reminded of Karl Jung's famous line: "That which we resist, persists." (Of course, that doesn't mean we shouldn't ever stop working to promote the values we want to support---I'm not necessarily condemning anyone for doing so, because the same claim could be made, in reverse, to those promoting LGBT equality--just noting it as an interesting double-bind).

There has always been, and probably always will be the phenomenon of the "Forbidden Fruit". There is only one solution that I know that works, albeit with plenty of missteps in between is "Teach them correct principles and let them govern themselves". Seems the wisest advice to me.

The first episode is online.

For those interested, you can see it here (warning: the link is to a gay blog that may contain ads with shirtless men).

I'm not surprised Bonneville chose not to pick it up--the content is something that most conservative Latter-day Saints in Utah would find offensive.

Daniel2

P.S. Of course, since in my world, "up is down and down is up," and I "never fail at calling 'evil' 'good,'" I thought it was fantastic! ;)

Very well said... I'll still sit next to you in Sacrament Meeting anytime.

It's Latter-day Saints like you--and the great members in my home ward--that made my return to church activity much easier!

Thanks for the link, Daniel. I'll watch that later this afternoon, when I have more time.

Interesting, too, that Ann Romney likes the show. ;) I watched her speech, last night, and I really like her. First time I've really listened to her for more than a few seconds.

I thought she did great, maybe she should run for president in the next few years just as Hillary Clinton did. ;)

I love the fact that she is championing women in her speech. She might be the feminist we need in office. Does anyone recall a first lady that was like her? Ok, Nancy Reagan's agenda was "Say No to Drugs". Both Mrs. Bush's were about reading. Michelle Obama's is on "Healthy Living"

Imagine if Ann Romney's agenda is wholly on women's issues and breaking traditions and giving them the power, woo hoo, and she's a mormon, that breaks stereotypes right there.

Wow, love it if it could happen!

While I'm not the hugest fan of how TV portrays LGBT persons...I thought it was pretty good.

It's on hulu for a limited time as well...less shirtless men ;)

After watching it, I could see why KSL wouldn't air it. It was definitely more crude. Honestly it was kinda weird to see a show that was obviously trying to fit within primetime TV as a "family show" with humor/scenes that I relate more to late night teIevision. Probably won't watch it again and I sure as heck wouldn't watch it with a child in the room...and I'm not even all that squeemish.... conservative.... or utahn for that matter. The opening scenes were enough to understand KSL's decision.

The acting was OK. I liked some parts definitely. But I thought the characterizations were often quite flat to be honest. And the racist homophobic grandma seemed over the top. Plus it didn't make me laugh...once. It's labeled as a comedy and it failed to make me laugh. It's not even all that hard for me, I laugh at people getting hurt and fart jokes for pete's sake. I'll stick to modern family, how I met your mother, and raising hope for my 30 minute laughs this fall.

With luv,

The only scene I thought was really over the top was the bedroom scene with the girl's husband who was cheating. That was tacky.

Some of the dialogue was flat and not very funny, I agree. Grandma...not funny...a caricature? (Which may have been the intent). Might get better? Who knows. I don't watch much TV, to begin with, so probably won't pursue this one.

What may not be "over the top" for you nevertheless may be scenes and themes that KSL does not deem suitable for its own ideals. That is really the crux of the issue. The station is not being "homophobic" but is adhering to its previously stated principles. The use of the word "homophobic" is being used so freely as a brand on anyone who dares to disagree the gay life style. It is losing its punch because of that. It was originally coined as a label for those who actually hate(d) homosexuals and expressed it with derogatory speech and hateful actions. It has now been made a cariacture of itself.

I guess I'm more Homoapethetic. I'm too busy trying to catch up on old Dr. Who episodes to watch the current network offerings.

(why is it every time I read the title to this thread it reminds me of a Kesha song?)

This whole discussion of different kinds of families (gay families) is about a lot more than just rejection of this one sit-com. It has a history. The church (and many other conservative religious groups) have a history of rejection of homosexuality and gay families, and I think that is really where the reaction is coming from, and why it is so strong.

KSL is running programming that includes homosexual characters and has less ribald humor. That is reading too much into the KSL executives decision. And bordering on mind reading the station executives as well as those who are offended by their decision.

Btw, I, personally, believe KSL has the right to decide what kind of programming they want on their station. They know their audience best.

I do think the people who are pointing fingers and calling names need to stand down a little and not be so quick to judge.

Boooo on KSL. Thanks for adding to our state's image of being a bunch of unaccepting homophobes...how embarrasing.

Nothing like Facebook to elevate intelligent and informed dialogue. I rely on it for all of my political facts.

Just thought it was interesting that this person that I know said this, among all her LDS friends. I definitely think that there is a division out there.
