Does anyone know the reference to this?I have never heard any other priority than the one you wrote above; though I have heard a slightly enlarged one. Our first priority is to our Heavenly Father, to know him, be in relationship with him through his Son, Jesus. Second, our relationship or commitment with our spouse. Third, our relationship/commitment to our family. Fourth, our commitment to the Church. Fifth, our relationship to our community/country/land.

For example, when we accept the commitment of parenthood, it involves not only our relationship with our children---a relationship that often takes first priority due to the total dependence of children on adults for their lives, health, and growth, but it is an extension of our relationship with our Father and of the one with our spouse. Thus not only is it appropriate to, for example, place a prayer on hold or interrupt a conversation with our spouse if a child begins to scream in the next room, we do not have to view such as neglecting our relationship with either as caring for children is part of the commitment we've made with God and our spouses.So it is important to make it clear that the priorities of the relationships is not always as simple as the list may make it seem.

The list should be viewed in its proper context. It is for the long-term. When the ox is in the mire, we save the ox. That is not changing our priorities, but responding to need.

What am I missing?There are several passages (both biblical and uniquely LDS) that point to the fact that governments are (at least originally) established by God for the benefit and protection of man, and that the rulers ought to be held in high regard (at least when they merit it).Lehi

I think perhaps I misunderstood what was being implied by country. I can buy the respect goverment part but I don't see that God really cares about the geographic boundaries of countries or which country a person is governed by. Edited October 12, 2011 by sjdawg

He inspired Nephi to write about this country. He spent a great deal of effort in establishing Israel and Judah as countries.Besides, the OP quote was not necessarily about borders and governance, it was about loyalty and resources.I don't know that He cares a whole lot about the exact borders, but I am convinced that "country" is a concern of His.Lehi

What am I missing?I would suggest that a better term would be community, starting at the neighbourhood level moving up through ever expanding associations to country and world.One can see this hierarchy in the instructions of the Brethren.

I don't view this in a patriotic perspective, but rather a commitment to community and to neighbor. This can quickly be expanded to country in that we are all united behind a specific political commitment. However, this should be viewed primarily from the position of devotion to the care of our neighbor, our community, our city, our state, our country; to our people. This can also quickly encompass our commitment to our world also. It is not an exclusionary principle; quite the opposite.
Lightbearer Posted October 13, 2011 Posted October 13, 2011 The following scripture came to mind when I read the OP and the thread: "And it came to pass that he rent his coat; and he took a piece thereof, and wrote upon it—In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children—and he fastened it upon the end of a pole." (Book of Mormon | Alma 46:12) while it does not list country, it does say our freedom, for without that we cannot properly worship our God or bless our families. This of course is the Title of Liberty which was championed by Moroni. While we do obey earthly governments and show them due respect, we are not bound to "blindly follow" those who would subvert or destroy our liberty. That is what the term "country" means to me in this context. Note that none of these are inferior to the other, but of course God must come first as well as the freedom to worship God which will bring peace and bless our families.
