Ancient Temple Imagery In The Book Of Mormon

I wouldn't normally do this, but this is going to be awesome!

I'm really looking forward to Education Week this year. I'll be teaching in my not so humble opinion, a really exciting series exploring ancient temple imagery in the Book of Mormon (one of my favorite topics). Just wanted to make sure all of my friends here were aware.

Classes will be in the Assembly Hall, Hinckley Center (HC), 4:30–5:25 p.m., Tuesday through Friday of next week. Always love meeting anybody who can stop by and say hello.

Everyone here is invited except for Bill Hamblin.

If it weren't for my work schedule I'd make the effort to be there. It sounds promising.

Good luck with it.

I have kind of wondered about that subject. What Priesthood did the Nephites have and what kind of ordinances did they do in the Temples? I am assuming that generally they had the Aaronic Priesthood but the Prophets had the Melchizedek Priesthood, but I don't know for sure. Good luck!

My understanding is that it was Melchizadek priesthood taking on Aaronic priesthood duties, kind of like the Elders passing the sacrament one Sunday.

David, wish I could be there. Maybe I can convince you to come to the Midwest and present it again to us saints in the hinterlands?

I can understand you not inviting Bill Hamblin. He tends to be kinda rowdy and distracting in those situations. Always steals the show. I think he learned that from Daniel Peterson.

As for the MP and Nephite temples, they likely performed the rites done in the First Temple prior to the Deuteronomist Reforms. The DR took out things like ministering angels, the Tree of Life, miracles, and possibly the concept of a Messiah. Those seem to have been restored to the Nephites via the Vision of the Tree of Life that Lehi and Nephi had.

Later discourses at the temple by Jacob and Benjamin support the restoration of those ideas.

After a harrowing return journey home through Las Vegas on a Sunday evening I doubt seriously I will be returning for such a choice talk. Darn! Are you going to post the transcript? Please!?

If I ever find out that you came through Vegas, and didn't think to have me buy you breakfast/lunch/dinner/frozen yogurt/heroine, I'll… well, I’ll… post in a thread that’s about Rabbi Bokovoy teaching a course on temple imagery in the BOM.

You’ve been warned.

I wouldn't come if you paid me.

OK, OK ... I'd come if you paid me a lot!

As in smoked pork butt?

There has to be a better way of putting that.

I didn't know(remember?) that you lived in Vegas. Next time fer sure.

If I were in prison the offer of smoked cigarette butts (of the Pork brand or any other) might be enticing.

However, I'm not in prison. (At least, not yet!)

But, Bill. It's not that type of smoked butt. Just sayin'!

Yes, yes, I know, not by bread alone...

The whole living in Texas thing really annoys me in times like these.

I think I might be coming down to visit the mission sometime this semester, we'll have to hang out or something if you're up for it.

And I'd come to Education Week! But there's that whole 'live on the East Coast' thing...it's prohibitive to such events...

Our anniversary is this weekend. I made plans for a trip to Montana to get out of the stifling South Texas heat prior to realizing that next week is Education Week. I have never been, but my wife has and has really enjoyed it. Looks like I messed up.

Any chance of an online version? I love looking for temple texts in the BoM.

This isn't on topic at all, but wondered where in montana you would be heading?

Back on topic-i'd love to make it to education week some day. I always hear great things about it. A presentation on temple imagery in the BOM would be especially interesting.

Aside from the MP part, these are very helpful suggestions, and we need to review what Margaret Barker has had to say along such lines.

any teasers to what imagery you see?

I hope to have a book out on the subject in the next year. Suffice it to say that in my mind, one would be hard pressed to find a Book of Mormon sermon and/or vision that did not feature allusions to ancient temple related rituals and symbols.

Thanks for being interested.
