rodheadlee Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 (edited) We went to Church today in our new Ward. It went over like a lead ballon, not too friendly. Maybe it's the pony tail. Nobody introduced themselves, we were 10 minutes late so we didn't introduce ourselves. I always go by the website listed time and it's always wrong, from Samoa to the East Coast of the US. Somebody really ought to make sure it's the right time listed. On a bright note, the Gospel Doctrine teacher was good.I'm not giving up, we'll be here for the summer. Jeff K. Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 Give it a chance. I have gone to wards where the members seemed somewhat harsh at first, but then after getting to know each other, it proved to be very nice and open. Ponytails are a momentary putoff at best. I wouldn't worry to much and just gird the loins and try again. The bishop should ahve sought you out right away though.
Messenger Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 Yes, I've been in wards where I didnt feel accepted by a few folks. It turns out the ones that didnt seem that accepting I ended up serving in with them in a calling! Hopefully yours will be like that or better. Also, when there has been nobody to welcome me, I ended up introducing myself to people as they walk into sacrement meeting.Good luck. I hope things are better next Sunday.
rodheadlee Posted June 6, 2011 Author Posted June 6, 2011 Thanks guys. I probably should have bared my testimony but I chickened out. I don't know what is up with me, I can sail in to a foreign port and make friends with the locals, sailors, who ever, 10 minutes after I get off the boat. I go to Church and freeze up. The Bishop was on vacation.... I was just surpirsed the folks on either side of us basically ignored us. I turned to introduce myself and they were gone. The one guy that talked to us had not been to church in over 7 years, he left after the first meeting, we left after the second meeting. It's like we can't do the whole 3 hours after being away a while. Although I have to say I really enjoyed going to church in my old ward back in L.A., but it took a while to break the ice there too. I'm sure it'll get better. 1
Maidservant Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 Yea, it's probably full of people wishing someone would say hi to them .I say this, because it is one of my greatest weaknesses. I've been a Mormon since they invented them, and I've been in this ward over 10 years. But I still sit there and hurt to be noticed, as if I couldn't get a little strong and notice someone else who is also probably sitting like me hoping to be noticed. 2
Garden Girl Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 Hi Rod...Please don't become discouraged... if you have to make the first move, try and do so...We have a tradition in our ward that when new people move in they are asked to speak in sacrament, including starting off by telling a little about themselves. I am fortunate because my small town ward is very welcoming and truly has a special spirit that new members, and our visitors, feel right away. When I returned to Church after 30+ years of being inactive, it was a Fast Sunday. The last time I attended people used to simply stand up where they were seated to bear testimonies rather than going up to the pulpit. So that's what I did, and it surprised everyone, and me because everyone turned around to look at me... but, people came up to me after meeting, greeting me etc. They took me under their wing and the rest is history. Not all wards are like this... in that case, and in your case Rod, you may have to extend yourself. I think it's just going to take a couple Sundays and you'll feel more welcomed and at home. Good luck, and I encourage you to keep attending no matter what.GG
rodheadlee Posted July 3, 2011 Author Posted July 3, 2011 I'd like to update and say my new ward rocks. We had a meeting with the Bihop about getting TRs and taking Temple classes. Well they are out of season for the classes here but we will be getting personal teaching. They are making it their goal to get us Temple ready before we have to leave the area. Thanks you all for helping me keep my perspective.

Jeff K. Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 (edited) Wards rock! \,,/ Edited July 8, 2011 by Jeff K.
cinepro Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 (edited) I stood up to share my testimony the first time we visited our current ward. I introduced my family, and notes that I hoped this would fulfill the "obligation" to give a talk as a new ward member. Four years later, it seems to have worked. While I've written five or six talks (other family members haven't been so lucky), I haven't had to give any. Edited July 8, 2011 by cinepro
