Here are the questions that are asked of those seeking baptism in the Church:

  1. Do you believe that God is our Eternal Father? Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the Savior and Redeemer of the world?
  2. Do you believe the Church and gospel of Jesus Christ have been restored through the Prophet Joseph Smith? Do you believe that [current Church President] is a prophet of God? What does this mean to you?
  3. What does it mean to you to repent? Do you feel that you have repented of your past transgressions?
  4. Have you ever committed a serious crime? If so, are you now on probation or parole? Have you ever participated in an abortion? a homosexual relationship?
  5. You have been taught that membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints includes living gospel standards. What do you understand of the following standards? Are you willing to obey them?
    a. The law of chastity, which prohibits any sexual relationship outside the bonds of a legal marriage between a man and a woman?
    b. The law of tithing.
    c. The Word of Wisdom.
    d. The Sabbath day, including partaking of the sacrament weekly and rendering service to fellow members.
  6. When you are baptized, you covenant with God that you are willing to take upon yourself the name of Christ and keep His commandments throughout your life. Are you ready to make this covenant and strive to be faithful to it?

(The above was quoted from the manual Preach My Gospel, page 206)

If you answer yes to any of the questions entailed in question four(I have bolded question four.), the missionary conducting the interview will refer you to the mission president to determine if you qualify for baptism.

The drinking of black/green tea falls under the Word of Wisdom portion of question five. There is nothing specific in the questions about R rated movies.

That is up to you. There are very few R rated movies that I go see. The last R rated movie I saw that wasn't thirty years old was "Saving Private Ryan" and I watched it with my teenage sons. I wanted them to see that wars are nasty things and should be avoided if possible. My older sons don't think of war as something clean and tidy after the first part of the movie.

Hello Wiipiing...

Welcome to the board.

About "R" rated movies... we are counseled by our leaders not to watch them because they normally contain lots of profanity, graphic violence, and sexual situations. Things and images that we don't need to be putting into ourselves... not conducive to the Spirit...

Occasionally I will watch an R rated movie, depending upon what it is, i.e., what the story is and the reason for the rating... for instance "Schlinder's List" comes to mind. And "The Missing" and "Open Range" both excellent western stories rated R for violence. And a few years ago, "The Passion of the Christ."

This is a choice I made, even though in essence I'm not following counsel in these instances.

And as far as tea... herbal tea is acceptable.

Why would pornography be OK if a rated R movie isn't?

then if I watch it can I still be mormon or mormon just really strict ?

Um, it would be really hard to be temple worthy while watching Pornography. It's not an addiction you want to get into.

It's very, very, very, very, very strongly discouraged and if you join the church, you will hear a million bagillion times how we should stay away from it. It's not about strict. It's about Heavenly Father wanting us to do what is best for us. It is degrading material to the user and those who take part in making it.

I do. He PMed me a bit of his background. Not going to share though.

Hi Volgadon...

Well, maybe he is but he can't possibly think pornography would be acceptable. He must have mental challenges considering his reasoning, i.e., if he can't watch R movies, can he still watch porn? Hmmmmm

if youve recived spiritual confirmation enough to join the church.. then why would you even desire to watch filth anyway?:)

The question isn't "am I allowed to ____________________". It should be "does this bring me closer to Heavenly Father, respect my purpose on earth, and help me learn to control my body and its desires in submission to His will?" When you receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, you will increasingly feel uncomfortable doing things that interfere with your eternal relationship with your Heavenly Father and your Savior. You will choose not just to avoid porn and R rated movies for the most part, but also a whole lot of books, TV shows, and PG-13 rated movies, and Teen rated video games (assuming you can find time to play video games when you are so actively engaged in good causes instead.) Tea is forbidden by the word of wisdom. But most of the decisions you will make you won't be told what to do. You will be taught your purpose and and the guidance and your divine nature and be expected to choose the better part. There are relatively few official DONT's.
