frankenstein Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 rather presumptive i think ""For Utahns and members of the LDS Church, it's an embarrassment of riches." - Kirk Jowers" I would not vote for romney or huntsman and I am LDS.. but i hope they both run, so that the true colors can be known, but I suspect knowing the truth would not much of a difference to persons who vote based on a party line.
Analytics Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Here:-SmacI can't wait to see who wins the Utah primary!
Daniel Peterson Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 In case anybody is wondering, I hereby announce my opposition to Jon Huntsman for President of the United States.
alter idem Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Hmm...Is he planning to run as a democrat? As a conservative Utahn, I won't vote for him. I was ecstatic when the President took him off our hands and sent him to China. I see nothing to recommend him as a candidate for President other than his money, his image and his pedigree--which is most likely the reason he's being considered. Typical Utah Republican establishment qualifications. And, he'll find that pesky 'mormon' label a liability. If Romney had a hard time getting votes because he's LDS, I don't see how Huntsman intends to get around it.

Calm Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 I hate US elections...they go on forever and ever and are such a waste of time and money. So wish there was a limitation on time for election like there is up in Canada where candidates have to stick to the point if they want to get their ideas across in the time allotted. Huntsman could be serving at least one more useful year as an ambassador before being forced to throw his hat in like this, but if he wants to compete for public attention here in the US, he has to put everything else that is constructive on hold and spend the next several years increasing his visibility.OTOH, I don't like the Canadian practice of having the majority party provide the top 'executive', I like the 'balance of power' in the US.
Jason Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 rather presumptive i think ""For Utahns and members of the LDS Church, it's an embarrassment of riches." - Kirk Jowers" I would not vote for romney or huntsman and I am LDS..Mr. Jowers simply meant that this is the most LDS presidential contenders we've seen, not that they are ideal candidates or that members of the Church should vote LDS.
Jason Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 I agree that our elections go on too long and cost too much money. I don't see a better alternative, however.

If Romney had a hard time getting votes because he's LDS, I don't see how Huntsman intends to get around it.I don't like Romney either as, in part, the disastrous Obamacare is modeled after his Massachusetts plan. Nevertheless, I would vote for either if they made it through the primaries. It's not the one man or the one woman anymore. Hasn't been for many many decades. The nation is so distinctly divided that the candidate and associated party entourage that most closely matches conservative and LDS values is easily identified. There is no third party candidate with the strength to win election against this country's opposition nor likely will there be.The real question is who will make court appointments and who is more likely to nominate and get confirmed the type of judge one wants. That is where the battle will be from now on.Romney
frankenstein Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 I don't like Romney either as, in part, the disastrous Obamacare is modeled after his Massachusetts plan. I wish more and more people who oppose obamacare realised/knew this very important tidbit of information.
alter idem Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 I wish more and more people who oppose obamacare realised/knew this very important tidbit of information.Mass. is a liberal state and wanted to reform healthcare using their liberal ideas to do it. I expect it was the State legislature's healthcare plan. As a governor of a liberal state, I think he had to make a lot of compromises to govern.
frankenstein Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 As a governor of a liberal state, I think he had to make a lot of compromises to govern.the evidence does not support your claim, wasn't it largely his idea?he even labeled it a "conservative idea"

Minos Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 This will be the only warning that anybody using this topic for an excuse to slam the other guys political party will be banned from the thread.

I wish more and more people who oppose obamacare realised/knew this very important tidbit of information.Everyone should indeed know these things but why those who oppose it in particular? Both plans have already significantly increased costs and reduced service and quality of service. Anyone with a rudimentary understanding of economics, like supply and demand principles, could have predicted it. Both plans require an ever increasing amount of tax dollars to support. Those are the real tidbits people need to know.

I expect it was the State legislature's healthcare plan. As a governor of a liberal state, I think he had to make a lot of compromises to govern. Partly true but Romney went much farther than even the Democratic legislature would and proposed an individual mandate which is in opposition not only to conservative values but also to LDS values as taught by, for example, the law of Consecration. And of course that let the cat out of the bag. Romney did veto some of the other onerous portions of the bill, but his veto was overidden in each case. It's possible that it went far beyond what Romney anticipated and into areas he did not want to go, but most conservatives know now that Romney doesn't have a grasp on conservative values or if he does he has no tradition of upholding them. So if there is also a true reasonably conservative candidate, Romney should not expect to get the conservative vote.
Stargazer Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 In case anybody is wondering, I hereby announce my opposition to Jon Huntsman for President of the United States.Because I find I agree with most (but not all) of your opinions/positions, I am really curious as to why you would be against Huntsman, especially given his successful stint as Gov. of Utah (vs Romney's disaster as Gov. of Massachusetts). Please explain! I've listened to some of the things he has said and found them agreeable with my own thoughts -- admittedly I have not heard a LOT of what he has said.

Jason Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 This seems a rather political thread, and I wonder how long it will last, but with regards to Romneycare, I will note that there is a difference in what a State government can do and what the Federal government can do.
thesometimesaint Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Jason:Actually no. Indeed, they don't.
thesometimesaint Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Jason:I agree that Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises should and are uniform between the states on the Federal level. I, the Congress and the Courts have agreed that Congress has the power to collect taxes for the purposes of to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defense and general Welfare of the United States.
Jason Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 So the point is that while Congress can't constitutionally mandate that we all buy health insurance, a state government may (depending on its own laws).
