Massacre At Mountain Meadows

Guess I am going to start with Bagley's as there is no library close to hear that has the others. I might check our used book stores, but right now I don't want to go spending a ton of money on books. I just spend $200 last week.

So much to read, so little time and even less money.

Sister-from-another-mister,

I would personally start with Brooks, and then read Bagley. After that, if you still have anything left in you, read Lee.

Also, you may want to get Dewey's OPR biography as it has a section on the Utah war that may help fill in some of the picture of the overall feelings and state of things in the region.

Hugs,

Yer Brudda

Okay it doesn't take much to convince me to make the purchase.

However I will have to hold off on the OPR and Lee book.

Once again I feel the pain of not living out west where these books are probably more available.

I would check Ebay and DB Auctions. I also like using this used book search engine http://www.usedbooksearch.co.uk/

Products can be purchased online from Deseret Book, iirc. Although, I doubt you'll find Bagley's book there.

Or at the FAIR bookstore...I'm pretty sure we have Brooks' book even if it's not listed on the website (we have had it in the past at least). Just email your request to bookstore@fairlds.org.

But if you are tight on cash, I'd go the Interlibrary Loan route. I doubt that there will be much in Brooks as far as reference material that is lacking in the newer text you currently have (in combination with the second volume, that is).

Is FAIR sold out of the new book yet, cal?

I hate to take away from DB and Fair but Aamzon has new and used listed for Juanita Brooks version as well as Bagley's

Don't think so as it isn't marked "sold out" on the website, I'll check. I've got to go pick up a book from our bookstore manager today, I'll ask then.

Depending on what FAIR's discount is, it may actually be cheaper than some of the "used" items when shipping is added in (FAIR keeps that very low). It's always good to check. However, I agree that if money is an issue, go for the cheapest you can find.

...Now that more of us have at least finished reading this book, how would you rank it amongst the other books about MMM? Maybe we could break it into three groups: fiction, non-fiction, and those books that mention it in passing. And just for kicks why

Just so this doesn't get lost why I am at the beach :P for the next week!!!

I would like to really developed alist of books, papers, and articles. I already have most of the major books Bagley, Brooks, Denton, Wise, Lee, and now but not least Turley. (I know there are others but my mind is on the beach ;) .) I have Mjor Carlton's report... I am just looking for whatever is out there that as a common joe with no connections that I can access.

Okay, it's settled.

Theophilus07 doesn't know of any Latter-day Saint sources that plausibly claim to have "been taught all their lives" that the members of the Baker-Fancher train "had it coming."

Nor did he at any time.

Shocking.

Poor Theo probably still thinks that an off-hand comment by Robert Kirby about something he claims to have heard some member say at some time or other constitutes proof about what Mormons have been "taught all their lives." And so it goes.

It would appears as such that it was a false statement.

Out of curiosity, I just checked at the downtown Salt Lake City outlet of Deseret Book regarding the availability of Massacre at Mountain Meadows. They sold their last copy yesterday but will be getting more in. The man there gave an unsolicited impromptu summary of the book and did a good job of telling me things that, unbeknownst to him, I already knew.

Interesting that, as popular as the book seems to be, and as controversial as the topic is, I have seen very little in the way of substantive negative criticism so far.

Just want to mention for some who live in the area and might be able to get to it quickly, there's a panel discussion tonight at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake City public library downtown about the new Mountain Meadows book. From the news release:

Panelists include Dr. John Mack Faragher from Yale University, a nationally known scholar on western violence; Dr. Philip Barlow from Utah State University, whose focus will be on the authors as LDS employees and on the bookâ??s place within Mormon studies and 19th century religious studies; and Dr. Donald Fixico, a professor at Arizona State University who will critique the book from an American Indian perspective. After each panelist gives his critique, Rick Turley will be invited to respond. Following Rickâ??s remarks, the audience will be invited to participate.

Should be interesting, though I doubt I'll make it. I need to go home and be a daddy.

Did anyone get to this? Is there anything to report therefrom?

My understanding is that there are several people who blogged on it, including Ardis Parshall (sp?) which is the one I read. If you need a link, let me know.

I admit, I haven't read any of the 'other' books.

What is recommended to get a different perspective?

For a critical opinion but plenty of footnotes, read Will Bagley's. For an objective opinion, and well researched, read Juanita Brooks'. For a biased, outrageous waste of time, read Sally Denton's and William Wise's books.

I have Bagley's now from the library and I bought Brooks so I should be good. Of course now I am sort of out of the interest again. LOL Thanks!
