Thanks, RDC. If the worst complaint about Shaken Faith relates to the cover, then I'll feel pretty lucky. Of course I've actually read a handful of ex-LDS reviews of my book that are quite negative-- which is amazing since the books haven't started shipping yet.

Oh, and I like the book cover. Simple but controversial. And that's just within the LDS community, so you know that the anti-Mormons will have a hey day just on the cover alone!

The only way I'll be writing a review is if I can convince the wife to allow me to purchase. As it stands, I have been pressing her to let me get on with Gardner's Second Witness (on to vol. 3!) so we'll see what happens. Then FARMS goes and releases some Nibley collection in a book. Good grief.

This will no doubt turn out to be one of most important books for LDS members with questions. If I ever lead a seminar like the Bushman one that just ended, as far as I'm concerned, your book will be the textbook.

You can be sure that I will not hesitate to recommend your book to those I come in contact with who need to understand the principles and workings of LDS apologetics, critical machinations, and, of course, answers to difficult questions.

book did a good job persuading someone not to leave any

church just because they may find something distasteful about

its past. There are usually bad apples in all religious faiths.

I believe that doctrine is the only important thing that should

cause one to either remain in a church or leave it.

Bought it, and started reading it! So far, it's excellent! There's a couple of stylistic issues I don't like about the way the text is set up (not your writing style), but the content is wonderful! I highly recommend it!

I've read most of the book and I have enjoyed it very much. The first section is invaluable for members who are new to tough LDS issues, and the rest of the book finally provides us with alot of answers to some of the most common issues all in one place.

traditions, policies, practices, and wise counsel. Non-doctrinal beliefs

may be useful and true, but they are not official doctrine unless the First

Presidency officially expresses them as such.

Sometimes we conflate the implementation or presentation of a

doctrine with the doctrine itself. The temple endowment ceremony, for

example, has changed since the days of Joseph Smith (see Chapter 25

for more details on temple changes). When some members see such

changes they mistakenly think that doctrine has changed. They become

troubled and wonder how doctrines of God could change. Elder Boyd K.

Packer has pointed out, however, that procedures, programs, patterns of

organization, as well as the practice, presentation, and implementation

of doctrine can change without changing the actual doctrine.7

When we recognize that both members and non-members

sometimes mistake official LDS doctrines with traditions, procedures,

policies, and the presentation of doctrine, many anti-LDS arguments

lose what potency they might have had.

I can't wait to go out an d by this book so I can have something to answer my sister with. She's so mean sometimes and brings up the most horrible stuff about the church. I just get so flustrated and don't know hw to answer her. I hope this will help.
