Don’t forget in the end it’s Time that decides what to print and if it’s not acceptable, they won’t. But how is teaching Christ’s commandment of love and respect not mentioning Jesus and what was most important to him or not calling people to repent in a time where disrespect is all around us? https://time.com/7315003/russell-nelson-dignity-respect/

People and cultures need time to adjust to change, to digest and make the new fit like skin just as the old once did. That can happen quickly with individuals, but changing communities takes much longer.

No, Dan says the text says God lied or changed him mind. He says it’s more likely intent of the story is God lied. God is an antagonistic to humanity in this part of the Bible, God doesn’t want humanity to encroach on the boundaries of the divine. God is not a loving father here. The text says, not Truth….he is not claiming that God is a liar, he is not claiming there is a God, he is not claiming a doctrinal or truth position, but examining the text’s language and how that should be interpreted.

Thanks for pointing that out. I didn’t pick that up the first time, may have stopped too soon or popped over it and when I encountered it, felt I had done enough criticism for the day…. But it just isn’t right for Saints to be doing this. We get mocked for peculiar ideas, for being cult like in other eyes…so it’s okay if we turn around and treat them as mindless, foolish, nonsensical? Let’s be adult at least if we can’t bring ourselves to stop ridiculing others out of love.

Up in Canada, one of my husband’s student was a convert from Islam. Unfortunately her family was the more radical type and she was under a different name, etc. to make it harder for them to find her. I have known one or two others who did not have that issue at all. When I first moved to Utah, I went to an interfaith conference where the local Imam, I believe, praised the Church, Utah, members for being Muslim friendly.

Ignore everything I just said about him then. Though agree throwing out Nazis on conservatives is just as wrong. -

Technically he may not have been claiming they were socialist, just denying they were conservatives/right wing unless I missed something. A lot depends on how one defines right wing. Since there is an argument that Nazis are socialists coupled with the argument they weren’t right wing out there, it’s understandable why you interpret his remark that way, but I think you are wrong that this goes to that extreme. Possibly may be implying by default they were left wing or centrist, but it is also possible he sees them as not categorizable. Nationalism isn’t inherently right or left wing, even if more often associated with the right. Neither is racism. So this doesn’t seem to me that it supports him saying Nazis were socialists. While I do think the party’s platform is important to the discussion, the conversation shouldn’t end there like it feels like he is doing though because it’s even more important than the platform itself what points they implemented on the platform and which they didn’t or did so superficially when they had the opportunity. Of course it’s X, so it’s less conversation at times and more ‘soundbite’. I appealed to AI for a summary of the economic points in the platform amd if they followed through… -
Which vehicles feel like they're going slower than they really are?
Calm replied to Tacenda's topic in Social Hall
Our latest car is quieter and has a smoother ride than previous cars, so I have to be careful not to push the pedal harder to make it feel right. I also need to get used to having the speed as a number, which ultimately will be nicer than estimating by position, but my brain isn’t used to it yet and it tends to ignore the speed given looking for a speedometer dial…or is it a gauge? Or either? -
Are you asking a Catholic this or throwing it out to generally?

I think that was the point.

Pres Hinckley as well, though didn’t have to warm up to him. He came across to me as gentle, informed, articulate, actually engaging with people rather than just preaching at them. He was comfortable in front of a mic or audience which helps me relax and enjoy the conversation (even though one person is speaking out loud, it’s still a conversation to me with my inner commentary). He gave me a sense of security, which I always appreciate. He felt grandfatherly to me (based on my two grandfathers which may not be the typical grandfather vibe for others).

In this case there really wasn’t any substance to the person’s claims, so the value of it was just being able to be entertained and proving their superiority…or so it came across to me.

Also it takes a lot of mental space to make decisions, even trivial ones, for some people (including me at this point of my life). This may be because when making a decision the mind tries to calculate all the possible cost-benefits or outcomes to find the best one and if detailed oriented, that can take time. Multiple steps means a decision has to be made at each level. Seeing something as a whole means only one decision is needed and if it’s routine enough, sometimes not even that. Decision paralysis is more associated with ADHD than autism.

I agree I am and I may be off base, but I had a very strong reaction to it and not a good one. First, I have a very hard time with people mocking someone in this fashion. It comes too close to bullying for me in my experIence. I also get why the absurdity of it is appealing….if they had stuck with that, I think I would have given it a pass. I think it got too personal laughing at his looks and personality. I did assume there was more of it than the transcript shows so far, it has that vibe for me, the in group laughing at the dumb outsider guy who thinks he’s smart, but I could be over sensitive and my assumption may be wrong and they would be laughing in just this way no matter who said it, even if the most put together attractive celebrity and not that it’s extra hilarious because of his appearance and demeanor. Second, I have seen people harmed by those with a lot of confidence but unrealistic views, though in my experience it’s not the outsider but the popular person that people automatically trust and support and cover mistakes for that does this. I prefer confidence based on a realistic view of one’s self and others.

Is that really going to help you in life to have that level of misplaced confidence? Will it drive you to prepare yourself before taking on a project or just cause you to stumble in and waste your efforts?

The Book of Abraham: NEW Research That Proves Critics Wrong
Calm replied to Stargazer's topic in General Discussions
I am not conflating anything. The Nazis called themselves Socialist, but did not pursue a socialist agenda except for a few minimal cosmetic programs to keep workers quiet. They did not remove private ownership and they did not attempt to have greater wealth equity or equality among their citizens. One of the first things they did was outlawed trade unions. Some industry was taken over, but for the war effort. The Nazis worked with the leading businesses for mutual financial benefit, even to the point of providing slave labor. Where did I summarily dismiss him? I expressed concern over his bias influencing interpretation to such a great extent. Same concern I have with everyone including myself, but raised to the red alert status. I agree that he is more than halfway educated***…that is why I am concerned if he actually holds this position, which I am not assuming is true based on ttribe’s word given the significance of it. I am way too aware that miscommunication/misunderstanding occurs for the trivialist of reasons at times and never assume that stuff claimed about a person is true unless there is strong evidence for it. For something at this level, like I said before I have to see it to believe it. (I did say I “might” have to see it to believe it, but I quickly got to ‘no, I have to see it to believe’ and should have edited my comment to indicate that before now). However, the possibility that ttribe is accurate leads me to be extra cautious to Hansen now where I was only cautious with him before since I wasn’t familiar with his background (education, level of expertise in church subjects), etc. I am naturally prone to view those I only know for podcasting with skepticism no matter what positions they hold as I have seen too many just pick and choose what supports their biases, choose guests and promote ideas to draw views, etc. ***If you read what I wrote with attention, you would have seen I was not saying all those who believed Nazis were socialists were halfway educated, but that no one who was more than halfway educated about the Nazis and what they did should believe that. I know there are educated people who do, but I see them as allowing their personal agendas to over influence interpretation of history. If socialism is really that bad, one shouldn’t need to rely on attaching Nazis to it. There are better governments to use for that purpose. Using Nazis to attack socialism is just being lazy, imo and makes it look like they don’t have actual evidence to support that position. (I don’t know if Hansen was doing this or just bought into the claims of someone who was.) It’s more understandable if someone is not educated in Nazi history to assume their name indicates their politics. I am not someone who believes everyone must be educated in Nazi behaviour or there is something wrong with them. Such education is ideal as understand the Holocaust and other major human tragedies can help us avoid them in the future as well as give us greater understanding of how we got where we are today, but this education level is not always possible for those with too heavy a load to do personal research and who have had at times to rely on crappy history teachers if they have even had the opportunity to study history at all in school. -
Yes, it would be interesting to see if there were any such visions prior to ERB’s book or whatever was his source.

I know of not teaching slaves without consent of their masters. What other ones are you thinking of?

So what is the use of this video except to mock this misguided man? What is achieved? What is learned? What makes one a better Saint for having watched it? So now they are mocking his glasses, the way he talks, his lack of charisma. The more I think about this the more it reminds me of how some girls bullied others in my junior high school. Not the example I appreciate having out there of our faith.

This Viral Ex-Mormon Interview Spreads INSANE Misinformation
Calm replied to Stargazer's topic in General Discussions
How? Please quote the exact part of the post that does this because I am missing it if it exists as is apparently Rain…and I tend to focus a great deal on anything suggesting abuse victims share responsibility for their abuse, but I also can miss it at times. It is quite an important topic to me, having young relatives and friends that were abused. I hate that on top of everything else they often experience shame and blame themselves. -

Ain’t going to happen. Too much easier in the ways most people want it to be. Very attention getting and holding attention. Much easier to get distracted from text. -
Really? It was just a pure thought experiment for me.😇
