authority transfer

Just heard a rumor that Salt Lake will be transfering authority for choosing bishops, ward boundaries, etc. in Canada to  headquarters in Toronto Canada. I checked the Newsroom and could not find anything related. Is this a trend world wide ? Anyone else know about this ? Am I that far out of the loop ?

It would make sense given two things…size of the Church, it’s getting large enough my guess is having to go through SL as well is slowing down the process and  second (pure speculation based on Australia), there may be legal issues that require charities/tax exempt organizations to be run by locals in some countries which could lead to a country specific policy or a worldwide change.  Like I said, this last is pure speculation, I have no clue if this has come up outside of Australia.

Another thought.  Canada has restrictions on donating to charities outside of Canada (exception on educational organizations that have a certain percentage of Canadian students).  I wonder if they are tightening up on in country organizations that are run by out of country organizations.

They created the "Canada Area" instead of having it based in SLC. I am surprised they moved the HQ to Toronto instead of Calgary or Edmonton. I wonder if the Area Presidency will live in Toronto or still reside in Utah, they haven't released many details. Mind you the vast majority of members probably don't even know the the Church has Area Presidencies and could care less about the admin. side of the church

edit. They got formal Area Presidencies starting in 1984 and have essentially cut the world into various parts with some measure of tweaking over the years. Prior to that it was a different system

Well, it was split into three parts, the NA North West Area, the NA Central Area and the NA North East Area

And did these share territory with US areas or were they just in Canada? (Been too many years since I looked at this info to remember)

The members in my area would now about the Area Presidencies.  We have videos from them that are shown in regular church meetings (such as 5th Sunday).  I don't know how common that is but it is interesting to hear from them.

Here's a map of all the areas in 2023.  You can see the three areas that encompass Canada.

And https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/canada-area is the announcement of the new Canada Area.

I am a visual learner, so always like maps.  :)   But no link so am not really visualizing it very well at the moment. ;)
