looking for current research on the dead sea scrolls. Recommended books, authors. greatly appreciating the help. it is for a Christmas gift for a family member.

I really enjoyed John J. Collins's The Dead Sea Scrolls: A Biography. I would recommend it to anyone.

If you are looking for translations, all I can recommend is the 2012 Edition of The Complete Dead Sea Scrolls in English by Géza Vermes (translator of the Dead Sea Scrolls). However, depending on who you are giving it to, it should be one of the first books most people who have books about the scrolls should already have.

Stay away from the Dead Sea Scroll Bible, it's kind of not useful. Neither a complete translation of the scrolls, nor is it usable as a Bible (it leaves the gaps), no real incites.

I have it and read it. It is boring.

Basically, a refence book for most of the non-Biblical texts, for when another book sites Vermes.

The Dead Sea Scrolls have been around long enough that anything that is 'current' is generally specialist stuff. And that means $$$ (Brill publishing or something similar). Here is my short list on current publications. First the ones on my list that I don't have yet:

I don't have any idea of the level of interest of your family member. But most people who are interested in the Dead Sea Scrolls usually have at least one of the larger translation collections (Vermes, Martinez, Wise, Abegg, etc.). The standard translations haven't really changed much in the last couple of decades. It is hard to find something in between casual introduction (lots of different volumes, and not that interesting once you've read a couple) and technical discussion (which can be hard to follow for those without some background).

I knew John Trevor, Da Man who discovered the Dead Sea Scrolls. I would see him occasionally at the Claremont School of Theology in Claremont California. He had a room in the Library dedicated to him with artifacts.

John Bergsma's book, Jesus and the Dead Sea Scrolls is excellent. Not only is Bergsma an excellent scholar, he knows how to write.

Very well researched and exceptionally written.

they are beginners in terms of academic studies but have been reading books I recommend and asking lots of probing questions. Budget to be determined by santa clause, or more likely his wife. santa gets pretty generous when someone asks for academic books, or so I have been told. 😆

None of my selections are good for beginners.
