The US power gird could not handle an electric vehicle fleet. It couldn’t provide the power and the infrastructure would be insufficient to transmit it.

We need another 1950s where we do mass improvements in infrastructure. This is a big ask when we aren’t even maintaining the stuff we have now.

Very true.

It is also confusing. Many people hark back to the 50s as a great time for the US because of general prosperity and growth. Then people claim they want to bring it back by doing the exact opposite of what caused that growth. Big public works projects are good for almost everyone.

I think a lot of people are just tired of the government spending money.  They don't even care what it's on anymore.  If people had more trust in the government's ability to manage itself, I think we could get more of these public works projects done.  (And that is not a dig at the current political party in power.  It's just as true for the republican party).

Back in earlier decades people trusted the government (and authority figures in general) a lot more than they seem to today.  We are a nation devoid of trust (which is also why conspiracy theories are having such a huge moment).

@The Nehor and @bluebell

this article gave a great overview of what needs to happen and the hurdles in the way with it. It did a great job of showing this complex play between several levels of government (local, state, national), the grid regional hubs (blanking on the name). Add to that an aging infrastructure mixed with systems that weren’t made for climate change and still factor weather patterns from as early as the 70’s to decide on risk and emergency plans.

I get that. I do wish people would realize just how much of a self-fulfilling prophecy this becomes though. To me, making decisions assuming gov is useless due to this distrust tends to weaken good government and reduce its capacity to function/meet the needs of the people.
