Not sure, but it might have something to do with the song being about the second coming, not the nativity.

That seems right, in keeping with the Second Coming theme. I don’t mind it with that in mind. I think that’s also why the line was changed from “the Lord is come” to “the Lord will come”. I think “saints and angels” expresses the same thought, in context, as “heaven and nature”.
