Sounds like this particular family just decided to use the occasion as an excuse to (as @bluebell said) throw a party. 

If that's what they want to do, that's fine. Seems kind of strange to me, but I'm not in their family and don't know what their family is like. 

it’s not a common thing in my association. I was never feted at a party for any of my priesthood ordinations, nor have we done so for any of our sons.

We haven't either.  Grandparents were there for some (but not all) of the ordinations, but nothing other than that.

Same here.  I've never participated in such a thing, nor even heard of it.  Grandparents and immediate family may be invited to a priesthood ordination, but that's about as far as it goes.

Yeah, and very early on, we even stopped doing that.
