But perhaps more than anything, I've had deep friendships and deep conversations with other believers, including LDS Christians, where I've seen, heard and felt their commitment to Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour

You have hit the nail on the head. This is my testimony about the LDS faith. It has nothing to do with the organization, doctrines, or scripture. It is all about commitment to Christ as Lord and Savior. That is also why I struggle to understand how and why for my LDS friends, the depth, reality, completeness of my Christianity, and my eternal destiny is based at least on institutional affiliation and compliance as much as my relationship to Christ. Try as hard as I might, I cannot get my head around that. I keep thinking, there must be something I am missing. Then the sarcasm hits and I take three steps backwards.

Simple.  Because we believe Christ has told us**** through our prophets today as he has in the past that there is one baptism, that we are commanded to be baptized in order to be saved, and that the Church of Jesus Christ is the one organization given authority to perform these commanded baptism.

****not in vague feelings, but in specific commandments as he gave in NT times.  Joseph Smith saw and spoke to Christ and his angels.

Finally, after three years I can understand you! Apparently a veil has been lifted over our communications!

Well on one trip to SLC they gave me a super secret number that I was sworn to secrecy not to reveal. I used that number to find out I had four direct ancestors who made the pioneer trip and that Elder Bednar is my 13th cousin! Now I have to go find it and see if maybe it was a sneaky way to assign me the mark of the . . . . . nah couldn't be! Now where did I put that number?

Ok. Guess we will simply have to disagree on a whole bunch of what you said in this post! Actually I disagree with the entire post! There . . . now I said it! No offense - no Umbridge (not even Dolores Jane)!  That is supposed to be a joke -hopefully no one will mock me for not knowing how to spell umbrage!

Now I hope you aren't offended that I disagree with your entire post!

Oh, and I would like to ask you a question. I think you are a good person to ask. . . . I spent time this morning looking up "mocking" in the  Bible, The Book of Mormon, and The Doctrine & Covenants. It seems that in each, mocking or being a mocker is roundly condemned, both implicitly and explicitly. My question is this, how is that some on this forum are so free to mock me? I cannot believe, based on my readings this morning that the LDS Church approves of a mocking spirit. I understand I probably frustrate folks at times, but in the LDS view of the Christian life do LDS Christians have the right to mock those defined as the "other" or who simply are not LDS?  I don't see them mocking those they are frustrated with who are members.

There is some history in the LDS church of mocking non-LDS folks (as there is the vice-versa). To reflect what you said in your post, "not in vague feelings, but in specific words." There is no doubt about that. For how many years (145 or so?) was the Protestant pastor mocked in the endowment service as being in the pay, service, and collusion of Lucifer, suggesting the cutting off of arms, and demanding pay of the apostles? Has this left a legacy in the older folk that it is ok to mock someone like me, a non-LDS minister?

It has been thirty years since 1990. Hopefully the younger generation has not grown up with the same indoctrination towards Protestants? A year or so ago I heard our Stake President tell a story at the end of a funeral service that portrayed a Protestant pastor in a horrible light. I was sitting not ten feet away from him up on the "stand" because I sang at the funeral. I couldn't quite believe that he told such a story that vividly and graphically contrasted a Protestant pastor and LDS missionaries. He read it from something on his phone. Is this just an accepted norm in the church? All the folks in our ward (the stake president is in our ward and brother-in-law to our bishop) know I am an ordained Protestant minister. I have had many good conversations with him. I am not sure how to interpret this mocking business. I would value your help.

Mocking is not consistent with our teachings, but we have our agency and can sin like the rest of the world.

If you want to PM me about it, I can discuss specific examples and tell you my opinion.  Publicly it should be something reported to mods if you feel that is happening rather than discussed in terms of specifics.

Mods don’t usually respond to problems on their own, but only if reported. I am not sure if mods even read the board for fun these days as I don’t know if the mods have a separate alias for that (in the past some mods slipped up, but there are only two right now who never have, so possibly they just moderate and don’t participate or they made a rule to only respond to reported stuff so as to not have to be in mod mode while reading as that destroys the fun as you pay attention to different things).  If the mod agrees it is mocking and not miscommunication, likely the poster will be banned from the thread and maybe the board for a time...though mods don’t check in all the time so it may take awhile and even a day or two on occasion.

I don’t report mocking and other personal negative comments I catch if it seems the mocked person prefers the conversation even with the mocking because they will lose that opportunity.  Sometimes the thread gets locked if it looks to be dominating it (I am not a mod, but I pay attention to that stuff having been a mod on another board, thus I know how hard the job can be to keep the board both active and civil and try to do my part to make it easier for them).

Is this just an accepted norm in the church?

Like any prejudice, some members don’t see such as inappropriate when it is. AntiCatholic comments pop up now and again as well, though not as often as when I was young. We may not have organized anti ministries in our membership, but some think it okay or funny to bash. Often asking them how it would appear to them if a nonMormon said the same about a Saint causes them to reconsider.

Yeah, but it does.

You believe it differently but the doctrine is everything to me.

Knowing I can become as Jesus was is exactly what my life is about. He was a human who" made it." I am a human who wants to make it. He did not have two Natures he had one nature the same nature that I have.

I do not believe that God is some amorphous cloud who is somehow three beings in one.

And if they were ancient true prophets there should be modern true Prophets.

Either God can communicate with his children on an individual basis and give us Doctrine for our times or he becomes virtually useless.

Scripture must have an open Canon or it is useless.
