Meanwhile, at the Long Beach Public Library...

So . . . I'm not sure just what to say about this story.  With no irony or rhetorical flourish intended, I am simply at a loss for words:

Demonic Clown Drag Queen Does Story Time at Michelle Obama Public Librar

BY MEGAN FOX OCTOBER 17, 2017

In what can only be described as an ironic venue, a demonic killer clown in drag was hired to read stories to preschoolers at the Michelle Obama Public Library in Long Beach, California. As if California couldn't be more of a cliche they go and prove us wrong again. On October 14, the library hosted this sick event featuring a demonic killer clown drag queen...for children. Was Baphomet busy?

This particular drag queen, named Xochi Mochi, calls himself a "killer clown from outerspace," "dragula," and "Super Monster."

The link has instagram photos of "Xochi Mochi."

Here's a bit more about this story:

Quote

“It’s so important to have representation and normalize all the letters in LGBTQIA+ in everyday lives,” Mochi said. “I saw so many excited faces it filled my heart with so much joy and hope to come back again soon! Thanks again to everybody who made this opportunity a reality and make such a successful LGBT event …”

...

A photo of the Drag Queen Story Hour posted on the Long Beach Public Library’s Twitter and Facebook pages was later removed, KCBS said.

But the Church of Satan had no such qualms, tweeting “Hail Satan!” in response to a parent’s criticism of the event, the station said.

Others were on board, too.

“Thank you so much for coming to the library, reading to kids and being MARVELOUS!” one commenter on Mochi’s Instagram page said. “I’m sorry you’re getting hatred. I’d give you a great big hug if I could.”

Commenters on a separate Instagram page reacted to the event, saying “I love our city so much!” and “Wondrous!”

horned-drag-queen-2.jpg

This article also addresses this story.  It includes an embedded video that starts automatically, about a drag queen who performs during "Drag Queen Story Hour" hosted at a public library in Brooklyn, NY.  The drag queen, known as "Little Miss Hot Mess," is shown in full regalia, asking all of the children "Who wants to be a drag queen when they grow up?"   He also leads the children in a round of singing: "The hips on the drag queen go swish, swish, swish..."

So what responses to this are, in your view, within the spectrum of propriety?

I am curious as to what sort of response the LGBTQ+ folks expect to elicit with such things.

I have appreciated the varied and disparate voices on this board, including those who speak to "LGBTQ" issues.  So I guess I'm wondering how folks who are seeking to make inroads with socioreligiously conservative folks feel about this sort of thing.

Thanks,

-Smac

You do realize that the PARENTS of these kids chose to bring their kids to this event.  And from what I can tell it looked like every kid was accompanied by their parents.  When the parents of these kids were asked why they liked the program, this was the response shown in the video.

Quote

Parents say they welcome the diversity.  "You know, that's what I am looking for in all of our outings is to present different ways of being in the world and available to my kid."

This might surprise you, but not all parents feel that everyone has to dress in white shirts and ties in order to be good.  Are we now going to have another thread on how evil gay people are because they are not like us?  Carry on.  Some on this board love these kinds of threads.  After all, we all know that Halloween is the only day of the year that real people are allowed to dress differently.  More than that and it obviously comes from Satan.

Stoke the fire SMAC.  Lets see how riled up we can get the Mormons against something outside their comfort zone and condemn parents that have a different world view than what is defined in Utah.

What does Utah have to do with this?

One thing I love about living in San Francisco is the diversity.  People have the freedom to express themselves any way they want.  You can be walking down the street and see the most bizarre outfit and no one even blinks.  I would guess that just on my block alone there is more diversity than in most towns in Utah.  I like that.  I like that people don't get hysterical if someone is not just like them.  I like that people are not judged by whether they are wearing a white shirt and tie just like everyone else in the room.  We have very different perspectives and life experiences.

Utah is one of the most homogeneous  states I have ever been.  And quite honestly it freaks me out just about as much as you being freaked out with a drag queen reading stories to children.  I remember staying at my brothers house in Sandy.  It was Saturday night of conference.  At 5:55 90% of the garage doors opened up.  Suburbans backed out and drove literally two blocks the the church.  A traffic jam that lasted for 5 minutes.

Look, the story is silly. I wouldn't take my child to this. But I love this quote from your source:

Quote

Libraries today are nothing more than an apparatus for injecting leftist ideology into children -- from pushing porn filled books to indoctrinating them into the LGBTQ groupthink.

As part of the ongoing radicalization of the American right wing, the propaganda ministry is scaring its followers away from dangerous places like libraries and colleges, where learning takes place. I just wish they'd limit themselves to two minutes of hate, but the people undergoing right wing radicalization seem to be consuming this kind of material all day every day, amping themselves up full of hate and fear.

When I see some newfangleded thing like this, I ask myself what the leaders of of the Church would think of it? In the case of this particular incident , I come back with the clear answer that it would deeply disturb and disgust them. To me this event, and others like it, is sure evidence a large segment of our society is ripening in iniquity. The fact that some adults think it's a good and healthy idea for young children to be exposed to the bizarre antics of a man who describes himself as  "Little Miss Hot Mess" is evidence many adults are willing to lead the youth of our nation down to the insanity of hell, all in the name of some misguided form of 'compassion.'

You seem really hung up on stereotypes. I rarely see anyone wearing a white shirt where I work anymore (a newsroom). I don’t even see many neckties. I don’t see all that many suburbans in my church parking lot. I doubt most of us could afford them.

Good one.  Now we are talking.  Some are different than us.  A sure sign of Satan taking over the world.

I agree.  This kind of activity wouldn't be something that attracts my family's participation but I see stories like this as a dog whistle to the ultra conservative and religious for a target of their disdain. What purpose does a story like this serve other than to provide a subject of ridicule and judgment so some people will feel better about themselves. Some won't like the way she looks or acts or the parents that would take their children to this. People can be offended and outraged by the evil of the world. I see nothing positive in any of that.

Romans 1:21    Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
1:22    Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
1:23    And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
1:24    Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
1:25    Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
1:26    For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
1:27    And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
1:28    And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
1:29    Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
1:30    Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
1:31    Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
1:32

Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

I pray for this lost soul!

So what other reason do you have to post this on a Mormon Board.  Did you want to praise diversity and hope that the Mormon church would be more welcoming?

I'm not sure it's a dog whistle.  It seems more like a chorus of airhorns.

There's nothing subtle or indirect about this: "It’s so important to have representation and normalize all the letters in LGBTQIA+ in everyday lives."

And this is what is being "normalized":

download-1-1.sized-770x415xt.png

And the immediate and knee-jerk response from folks like California Boy is to go on the offense, to make false accusations, to essentially throw a hissy fit for daring to even discuss this story.

Another good one.  Obviously this guy's soul is lost to Satan because you know what kind of person he is and how he treats others.

Nothing says I am an evil person who has lost his soul to Satan because of the way I dress.

Ridicule and judgement is the exact reason why someone would post an article like this.  It gives Mormons the opportunity to express how these souls are lost and not like them who are surely on the only true path back to God.

Are you saying this is not being given to us as a "representation?"  Not of "the whole LGBT movement," but of some portion of it?

Moreover, Fred Phelps and his group are pariahs.  They are not supported or endorsed or celebrated, and are instead condemned and disowned, by the vast majority of "religious conservatives."

So are you suggesting that this drag queen is likewise a pariah in the "LGBT movement?"
