It is a principle of intelligence, and revelation. It is a principle that reveals things past, present and to come, and these gifts of the Holy Ghost were to be received through obedience to the requirements of the gospel as proclaimed in those days and as proclaimed by the Elders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in these days. What I'm confused about is when he mentions "these gifts of the Holy Ghost". Why is he talking about the gift in the plural? What does he mean by this?

The gifts to know past, present, and future (more of this in temple) and the gifts of intelligence and revelation. You could also include all other spiritual gifts as well. Upon receipt of the Holy Ghost everyone is guaranteed at least one gift of the spirit. Most people have several.
