A gal in my Kaysville, Utah ward recently got her call. She was so excited and really wanted Australia. I watched her open the call on a live FB video. When she said Orem, Utah. I could tell she was trying not to sound disappointed. I was little shocked that she got a call in the same state she lived. But she does have Cystic Fibrosis, so maybe that is why. And it was Spanish speaking so she was excited about that. I wonder if anyone gave her a warning that it might have to be in her home state or not. She is fine in every other way. I guess I was a little surprised. But Utah is big enough for her hopefully to feel like she isn't serving too close to home.

Her CF is more than likely why she is close to home. If she has classical CF then would have to spend several hours per day taking medication and doing physio to stay healthy. I doubt she would be allowed to go on a typical mission. If she is an atypical CF adult, then she would probably have milder symptoms and her health regime would give her more leeway. In either case, it's better for her and her family that she not be far from easily accessible medical care.

He's pretty excited. We've been to South America many times so he's well prepared culturally. Thanks for asking.

Cool!

My only grandson to serve a mission was sent to Brazil Fortaleza.  It happens that his mother is half-Brazilian.  I am half-German (my mother was of 100% German descent, although it was her grandparents who were the immigrants), and I was called to Germany on my mission.  I do think that ancestry is considered when making missionary assignments.

Yes, my son is 50% Utahn and was actually born in Utah in the same hospital as his dad and ended up being sent to Utah on a mission ;) ...even though he had lived for 6 months in Russia, lived in Canada and had taken French.

He also wasn't that fond of going back to Russia and hated French (not great at language and had some poor teachers).  In the end it was a great mission for him and the family.  I never had to worry about him, which given his sister was diagnosed with diabetes shortly after he left was a real blessing for us.  We even got to come down and see him which helped him and his sister deal with the shock of her disease ( they are close even though 8 years apart).  Turned out the bishop at that time had a daughter one year older than ours and the previous year she had also been diagnosed, so her family could show our son what it was like in many ways.
