From Pres. Joseph F. Smith

"We see no impropriety in brethren gathering individual testimonies concerning the truth, either from the aged brethren or from the elders returning from missions. On the contrary, we believe that the testimonies of our aged brethren who knew the Prophet Joseph Smith, and other early elders and leaders of the church, ought to be secured, and carefully recorded; provided, of course, that the circumstances are well authenticated and carefully and accurately stated. We fear that many things that are reported as coming from the Prophet Joseph Smith, and other early elders in the church, by not being carefully recorded or told with strict regard for accuracy, have lost something of their value as historical data, and unwarranted additions have sometimes been made to the original facts, until it is difficult to determine just how far some of the traditions which have come to us may be accepted as reliable representations of what was said or what was done. Let those who feel impressed to make a record of facts, as they become acquainted with them, do so; but let them exercise the greatest care in obtaining accuracy of statement and in giving the authority for the statements they record  " I.E. I remember hearing about this first as a kid.  I remember wondering what does that matter?  After some consideration I wonder again, what does this matter?  If Moroni did, whooptey-do.  If he didn't, then it's fun to say, particularly with storied legends that somehow arose in the early Utah period where almost everything that happened carried weighty significance.

Yeah, I don't see any issues with this. I heard all the stories about him dedicating these temple sites as a kid as well and have no issues with it.  As pointed out above it is easily done within the 36 year timeframe he had.  I have posted a link a blog post showing that the travel distance between the two is attributed.  There are more people who have covered a similar distance in similar timeframe that I didn't include in the blog post.

Perhaps we should add this claim to the long list of other youngism's disavowed by the church

Exactly. If it sounds crazy 100 years after the fact it was merely "personal opinion."

Also by Joseph F. Smith, since we're collecting his quotes here:

"[Well, Congress of the Unites States,] I have never pretended to nor do I profess to have received revelations.  I never said I had a revelation except so far as God has shown me that so-called Mormonism is God’s divine truth; that is all."

I wasn't under the impression that my quotation of Pres. Smith was a revelation and we know he recieved what is now known as section 138 of the Doctrine and Covenants

The quotes about Moroni dedicated temple sites throughout North America definitely strongly supports the LGT

Actually, it's just the opposite.  Included in the Brigham Young quotes in this thread are his statements about the Nephites (plural) dedicating sites and not being able to build.  That doesn't fit with any modern LGT models.

Here's one BY reference from earlier.

"The brethren then wanted to move the foundation line 12 feet to the south, so that the spring of water would be on the outside of the Temple. "Not so," replied President Young. "We will wall it up and leave it here for some future use, but we cannot move the foundation. This spot was dedicated by the Nephites. They could not build it, but we can and will build it for them."

Actually, that quote and the quote of Moroni and the maps very easily fit in the LGT and Mesoamerica models.

This does not preclude a Mesoamerican model.  Moroni was a Nephite.  If he dedicated the site as was stated earlier, he was unable to build the temple.  This is not at odds with the quote by President Young.

BY speaks of the Nephites as plural, and it matches other statements by him as well, including his talks from the pulpit about gaddianton robbers in Utah and the west.  Still doesn't fit in modern LGT models imo.
