No. Okay. But that will mean that very large numbers of the female members of the military would be kicked out, and huge numbers of women moving forward would be precluded from servicing in the military because they cannot meet the physical requirements. Would you be okay with that? As an alternative, the military could lower the physical requirements across the board to a level generally attainable by women (and substantially easier for men). This would, I think, necessarily render our military materially less effective than it is now. Would you be okay with that? Quote And I think the military has made it abundantly clear that that is not and will not be the case, at least with regard to combat roles. That is not my understanding. Quote In that regard, I see no problem with reevaluating the requirements to ensure they truly match the job in question and the military's needs at the time. I am not sure what you mean here. Does "reevaluating the requirements" = "consider lowering the physical requirements for both men and women?" Quote I also think that there is no longer a need for a draft, nor a need to register for the draft. But so long as there is a potential of compulsory service, I don't see how sex discrimination in the process can be justified. What about age discrimination? Do you oppose that as well (relative to the draft)? Thanks, -Smac
carbon dioxide Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 Combat today is much different that combat 50 years ago or more. Now much of what soldiers do requires just a push of a button. The missile does the rest.

BCSpace Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 My opinion on the OP is that the push make women eligible for the draft is a political ploy to further hamstring a President's ability to go to war by angering women when war is called for. In general, it wouldn't work because our army is all-volunteer and that would have to be abolished as well; something that the same people who want women drafted are also trying to accomplish for similar reasons. That alone in my book makes drafting women wrong but moreover, I agree with the Church's anti ERA stance. If in war, we come to dire straights, I believe women will take up arms and fight with the men on their own anyway to preserve our country and way of life. 1

I think women should be exempt frothed draft but that is more my sense of chivalry then anything else. Realistically the draft should never be needed again unless there is a situation of severe internal unrest. Real nation to nation warfare between industrialized nations will end in weeks, far too short a period of time to call up a draft and train them. So if we would give up the interventionist policies that give us quagmires like Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq we would never need a draft again unless we end up in a civil war. The last time a draft was justified was the Second World War.
flameburns623 Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 I wonder if there will be an exemption for a woman who conscientiously objects on religious grounds?

Moral is terrible and who wants to follow orders regarding a cause they do not believe in? I am glad I was not old enough to be drafted in Vietnam. I would not have gone. Why should I go to a country that has not attacked the US to kill people in their own country who are simply having an civil war among themselves on what leader or political system to follow? It is not my fight and I would refuse to pull a trigger. However in the issue of equality and fairness, if men are drafted, women should be drafted as well. If women desire equality with men, it should also include all the garbage the men have to deal with as well.

If I agree that women should not be required to serve missions, a much less dangerous occupation, I cannot tell them they have to go to war. The primary motivator was fear of the Communist power bloc. Cold War fear led us to do terrible things.
