The problem is there are a lot of charismatic religious leaders who say God has told them to do polygamy or all sorts of other sexual abnormalities. It is tough to know who God is telling what. My thoughts are God is not telling any of them, including Joseph Smith and his successors to engage in such nonsense. While it's not really as tough as you claim to know what God wants (just ask!), what's clearly evident is that God has not sanctioned SSM. Many of us that have asked God about polygamy have come to a different conclusion than you on that particular aspect of marriage.

Many of us have asked God about polygamy and have been told by God it was not sanctioned by him. What a dilemma we have. So who is right? Does your answer trump mine?

That wasn't the point I was making. However, there is an inconsistency in your posting. You initially said it is "tough to know who God is telling what" and then you said that your thoughts were that God is not telling any of them. After I post that God does indeed tell people what His wants, then all of the sudden you've gotten an answer from God that He doesn't sanction polygamy! Sounds like the usual knee-jerk response of "I got a different answer" to dismiss the importance of information from the Spirit. I'll take your claim of an "answer" with a grain of salt. In any case, the point I made is valid, having been inadvertently confirmed by you. It's not tough to know what God wants. You just have to make the effort to put yourself in tune with Him, and the answers and direction do come.

But then you are saying that only you are the correct arbiter for someone else's testimony. It is the old problem of which testimony is true. That is fundamentalism. Effectively it says that NO testimonies are "true", except yours

Indeed you miss my point entirely. The point is many charismatic religious leaders claim God has told them to practice polygamy or some other form of odd sexual activity. I don't think any of them were told by God to do do. And as far as you taking my own claim as an answer with a grain of salt no surprise there. Your posts are full of your own claim to special knowledge from God. I am not surprised you dismiss someone who claims an answer different than yours. I'll put as much credence in your claimed revelation as you do in mine.

On the polygamy issue I don't think I am. At least for me.

I had to be an atheist before I was Mormon- I am absolutely positive. That was the prerequisite course for me

But polygamy isn't "odd." Historically it has been extraordinarily common. What's really odd (apart from the ridiculous, filthy notion of "same sex marriage" that is) is the idea of marriage as a way for adults to find happiness and personal fulfillment. While that can be a by-product of a successful marriage, what authentic marriage is really about is family-building.

I presume the Church will continue to be a great force within the world for teaching the value of commitment and fidelity. It would be great if we could have the same influence within the gay marriage population, but that would require accepting some things that we aren't willing to accept right now. By "we" I presume you mean the New Privileged Class? If so, you are right; they'd have to accept that there is no ceremony that can sanctify their preferred sexual behaviour, which is and always will be morally wrong. And that they therefore need to repent. The good news is that after repentance comes the blessings.

I don't recall it being a command for exaltation. 2:. Slavery was historically common and still is practiced yet it is still an abomination. The LDS Church today teaches monogamy is God's preferred marriage system. 3:. I believe marriage is build an emotionally intimate as well as physically intimate relationship with one person as well as make a family. I can't imagine marrying simply for family building without the other components,

I don't recall it being a command for exaltation. That assumes that we have a complete account of the life of Abraham. It is possible that he was commanded to do so though it did not wind up in the current scriptures we have. I would assume that there were many things that were culturally acceptable in the time of Abraham that was against the laws of God. I don't think Abraham would make a decision on whether something was simply culturally acceptable without it also being acceptable by God. I am also sure there were things that Abraham would do that might not be culturally acceptable. I don't think Abraham would use that in the equation of to do or not do something. If God is okay with it, Abraham would do it, if God is not okay with it, Abraham would not do it. Regardless of what the culture accepted or not.
