County Clerk Defies Federal, Appeals, And Scotus Court Orders Against Her, Invoking Her Faith And Religious Freedom

Not hard to see where she gets her sound religious principals.

So gay marriage leads to polygamy, destruction, broken families, AIDS, people dying of disease and "brokenness of relationships".

I am surprised he didn't include war and famine.

That's odd. Seems that gay marriage would be a significant aide to fighting AIDS.

I'm saying they could have done that. What the did do, setting aside whether it was justifiable or not, is not comparable to what Rosa Parks did. She was engaging in passive resistance; they were making assertive and aggressive demands.

They picked a fight; Rosa Parks did not. HappyJackWagon was right.

That does not follow. I have never said nor implied what she should have done. (I actually agree with what she did.) I've only said that it is not comparable to what the gay couples did in the county clerk's office. She was passive; they were aggressive.

As others have said what Rosa Parks did was much more aggressive. She was hauled off in handcuffs and knew that was the likely result. I would have done the same thing if I walked into a government building and was denied a marriage license for being Mormon or being blue eyed or whatever. I would have gotten loud and made a scene. I want to call attention to what this nitwit clerk is doing.

What are you worried about from them being angry? That they hurt her feelings? That their approach got them into the news (government officials refusing to do their job belongs in the news)?

I'm fine with her acting the part of a martyr as long as it's in jail. I think the judge was right that fines would not have been enough to compel her to act as I'm sure there are many donors who would aid her in paying any fines. Jail hurts. It's sad that she's choosing it but it's difficult to have sympathy for someone who is thumbing her nose at the law and the civil rights of citizens.

I assume she could resign her position instead of waiting for the legislature to impeach her. So she does have that option. I assume she wouldn't be subject to jail if she no longer held her elected position.

I coming around to see some wisdom in the incarceration. Yes, she'll be a martyr. But from what others have posted it seems that her staff was not on board with her decision, but still felt they couldn't defy her. Keeping her locked up gives freedom for the staff to begin issues marriage licenses to all couples without interference.

It will be interesting to see how this shakes out. Does the Kentucky legislature have the political will to remove her? If not, then what?

Federal judge jails her indefinitely until she does her job or it is time for reelection. The federal Supreme Court is not going to touch this since she started adding the governor of the state to her complaint. The idea that a civil servant does not have to obey the instructions of the governor in regards to their duties is not a case. It is farce.

Obviously she has no case, especially since her legal counsel made a mistake in making the governor the target of her complaints, but that won't stop her from playing the martyr. If she genuinely believes she can't fulfill her duties as county clerk because of her religious beliefs, she should resign.

So far, three of the six clerks serving under her have agreed to begin issuing licenses.

Ms. Davis' own son is among the remaining three clerks to have yet declared their intentions.

Bravo!

I feel bad for her. I think she's reacting to all this emotionally, caught up in her recent conversion. And maybe not having fully thought things through.

I struggle understanding this as well. Would people prefer gay individuals NOT commit to a loving relationship? Would they rather them act permiscuously with multiple partners where they are more susceptible to contracting and spreading disease? The fact that gays are moving in the direction of desiring marriage should be applauded and encouraged in my view. It's a healthy evolution for them and for society.

I don't. She might be a hapless idiot but I think it more likely she just wants the spotlight and to get speaking engagements and to become a mascot for the cause. In other words: to get gain and glory of the world.

My gosh, as a conservative I am too embarrassed for words that any other "conservatives" would support this woman.

You are not a real conservative.

Of course I agree with you.

She is wrong and as a public servant she needs to obey the law. She has no case.

Are you one of those (like me) who argued that the meaning of the word marriage was being twisted by having it include same sex couples? Just asking because you are doing the same thing with the word conservative.

Timothy Chapter 4

1...In the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:

5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

I guess sarcasm is too hard to follow in the board. Even the mighty Nehor missed it. I should have put an emoticon after it. Oh well.

I was also poking fun of recent "no true Scotsman" threads.

Apparently Mike Huckabee is supporting the clerk. He calls her courageous.

I wonder how Governor Huckabee would have felt if one of his county clerks refused to follow his requirement to issue marriage licences and refused to abide the law of the land. And to think he could have been president...kind of...almost.

Update: five of the six deputy clerks will move forward with issuing marriage licenses. The only deputy clerk that refused is Ms. Davis's son, Nathan. I'm not clear yet whether or not he also faces jail time, or whether as a deputy he can simply be fired.

Thus Mike Huckabee further demonstrates why he should never be elected as POTUS.

The GOP candidates seem to be split. I guess this is a better topic then them trying to one-up each other with plans for building walls on all our borders.

In which case their claimed "humiliation" is a crock.

So, going to a government office to exercise your civil rights is "spoiling for a fight," and being denied your right is not a humiliation. Maybe not in New Zealand, perhaps.

Yeah because trying to secure the board is foolish. Not that I accept your premise anyway.

More updates:

After five of her six deputy clerks agreed to issue marriage licenses, Kim Davis was called back to the courtroom of Judge David Bunning, who offered to set her free if she would allow her staffers to perform their duties. Davis refused and was taken back out of the courthouse in the custody of federal marshals. Quite obviously the Liberty Counsel intends to make Davis into the figurehead of a national movement to defy the Supreme Court.

CORRECTION: Actually Davis did not personally return to Bunning’s courtroom. He spoke her Liberty Counsel lawyers who refused on her behalf.

Several couples have already said they will appear at the Rowan County courthouse tomorrow now that the deputy clerks of Kim Davis have said they will comply with the law. But in a new wrinkle, the judge now says that any licenses issued with Davis’ signature might not be valid

Ms. Davis' own refusal to let her 5 deputy clerks to issue licenses puts to rest the assertions or complaints that Ms. Davis should be left alone because "anyone else in the office that's willing to issue the licenses could do so in her stead."

It is clear now that this isn't about her own persona autonomy or beliefs--she is a government official imposing her personal religious beliefs and restrictions on other employees and the members of the public she swore to serve.
