HOLY CATHOLIC Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 Why would God tell Joseph Smith JR the Creeds were an abomination and professors were corrupt and the then give Joseph Smith the Book of Mormon which agreed with these Creeds and professors? Pearl of Great Price , Joseph Smith History 19 I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: “they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof.” Here are Joseph Smith statements against the Creeds and the Book of Mormon Joseph Smith: Many men say there is one God; the Father, the son and the Holy Ghost are only one God! I say this is a strange God anyhow—three in one, and one in three! It is a curious organization. . . . All are to be crammed into one God, according to sectarianism. It would make the biggest God in all the world. He would be a wonderfully big God—he would be a giant or a monster.“ (History of the Church * Volume 6 Page 476 * 1844 "God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted Man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens. That is the great secret... …I am going to tell you how God came to be God. We have imagined and supposed that God was God from all eternity. I will refute that idea, and take away the veil, so that you may see. … It is the first principle of the Gospel to know for a certainty the character of God and to know...that he was once a man like us.... Here, then, is eternal life - to know the only wise and true God; and you have got to learn how to be Gods yourselves, and to be kings and priests to God, the same as all Gods have done before you... (“King Follett Discourse,” Journal of Discourses 6:3-4, also in Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, 345-346, and History of the Church, vol. 6, 305-307,)" "I have always declared God to be a distinct personage, Jesus Christ a separate and distinct personage from God the Father, and the Holy Ghost was a distinct personage and a Spirit: and these three constitute three distinct personages and three Gods," (Teachings of Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 370) Why does the Book of Mormon agree completely with the 4th and 5th century creeds and completely disagree with the teachings of Joseph Smith? "I have always declared God to be a distinct personage, Jesus Christ a separate and distinct personage from God the Father, and the Holy Ghost was a distinct personage and a Spirit: and these three constitute three distinct personages and three Gods," (Teachings of Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 370) 2 Nephi 31: 21 And now, behold, my beloved brethren, this is the way; and there is none other way nor name given under heaven whereby man can be saved in the kingdom of God. And now, behold, this is the doctrine of Christ, and the only and true doctrine of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, which is one God, without end. Amen. Alma 11: 44 Now, this restoration shall come to all, both old and young, both bond and free, both male and female, both the wicked and the righteous; and even there shall not so much as a hair of their heads be lost; but everything shall be restored to its perfect frame, as it is now, or in the body, and shall be brought and be arraigned before the bar of Christ the Son, and God the Father, and the Holy Spirit, which is one Eternal God, to be judged according to their works, whether they be good or whether they be evil. Mormon 7: 7 And he hath brought to pass the redemption of the world, whereby he that is found guiltless before him at the judgment day hath it given unto him to dwell in the presence of God in his kingdom, to sing ceaseless praises with the choirs above, unto the Father, and unto the Son, and unto the Holy Ghost, which are one God, in a state of happiness which hath no end. Oliver Cowdery David Whitmer Martin Harris Doctrine and Covenants 20 : 28 Which Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are one God, infinite and eternal, without end. Amen. 2 Nephi 26:12 And as I spake concerning the convincing of the Jews, that Jesus is the very Christ, it must needs be that the Gentiles be convinced also that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God; 3 Nephi 11:17 Hosanna! Blessed be the name of the Most High God! And they did fall down at the feet of Jesus, and did worship him. Moroni 7:22 For behold, God knowing all things, being from everlasting to everlasting , behold, he sent angels to minister unto the children of men, to make manifest concerning the coming of Christ; and in Christ there should come every good thing. 2 Nephi 27:23 For behold, I am god; and I am a God of miracles; and I will show unto the world that I am the same yesterday, today, and forever; and I work not among the children of men save it be according to their faith. 2 Nephi 29:9 And I do this that I may prove unto many that I am the same yesterday, today, and forever; and that I speak forth my words according to mine own pleasure. And because that I have spoken one word ye need not suppose that I cannot speak another; for my work is not yet finished; neither shall it be until the end of man, neither from that time henceforth and forever. Moroni 8:18 For I know that God is not a partial God, neither a changeable being; but he is unchangeable from all eternity to all eternity. Mormon 9:9 For do we not read that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever , and in him there is no variableness neither shadow of changing? Mormon 9:19 And if there were miracles wrought then, why has God ceased to be a God of miracles and yet be an unchanging Being? And behold, I say unto you he changeth not; if so he would cease to be God; and he ceaseth not to be God, and is a God of miracles.” Hebrews 12: 8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. 2 Nephi 19:9 And I do this that I may prove unto many that I am the same yesterday, today, and forever; and that I speak forth my words according to mine own pleasure. And because that I have spoken one word ye need not suppose that I cannot speak another; for my work is not yet finished; neither shall it be until the end of man, neither from that time henceforth and forever. Moroni 7:22 For behold, God knowing all things, being from everlasting to everlasting, behold, he sent angels to minister unto the children of men, to make manifest concerning the coming of Christ; and in Christ there should come every good thing. 2 Nephi 25:29 And now behold, I say unto you that the right way is to believe in Christ, and deny him not; and Christ is the Holy One of Israel; wherefore ye must bow down before him, and worship him with all your might, mind, and strength, and your whole soul; and if ye do this ye shall in nowise be cast out. Mosiah 3:5 For behold, the time cometh, and is not far distant, that with power, the Lord Omnipotent who reigneth, who was, and is from all eternity to all eternity, shall come down from heaven among the children of men, and shall dwell in a tabernacle of clay, and shall go forth amongst men, working mighty miracles, such as healing the sick, raising the dead, causing the lame to walk, the blind to receive their sight, and the deaf to hear, and curing all manner of diseases. 3 Nephi 19: 18 And behold, they began to pray; and they did pray unto Jesus, calling him their Lord and their God. Mosiah 5:15 Therefore, I would that ye should be steadfast and immovable, always abounding in good works, that Christ, the Lord God Omnipotent, may seal you his, that you may be brought to heaven, that ye may have everlasting salvation and eternal life, through the wisdom, and power, and justice, and mercy of him who created all things, in heaven and in earth, who is God above all. Amen. 2 Nephi 11:6-7. "And my soul delighteth in proving unto my people that save Christ should come all men must perish. For if there be no Christ there be no God; and if there be no God we are not, for there could have been no creation. But there is a God, and he is Christ, and he cometh in the fulness of his own time." An abridgment taken from the Book of Ether also, which is a record of the people of Jared, who were scattered at the time the Lord confounded the language of the people, when they were building a tower to get to heaven—Which is to show unto the remnant of the house of Israel what great things the Lord hath done for their fathers; and that they may know the covenants of the Lord, that they are not cast off forever—And also to the convincing of the Jew and Gentile that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God, manifesting himself unto all nations—And now, if there are faults they are the mistakes of men; wherefore, condemn not the things of God, that ye may be found spotless at the judgment-seat of Christ. Translated by Joseph Smith, Jun. Mosiah 4: 9 Believe in God; believe that he is, and that he created all things, both in heaven and in earth; believe that he has all wisdom, and all power, both in heaven and in earth; believe that man doth not comprehend all the things which the Lord can comprehend. "And I looked and beheld the Lamb of God, that he was taken by the people; yea, the Everlasting God" (1 Nephi 11:32, 1830 ed) Mormons follow a different Christ then Christians... guerreiro9 Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 If we consider the text of the Book of Mormon carefully (and that may be hard for you given your agenda.), the most we can say is that in most instances it agrees with the King James version of the New Testament in its description of God.Neither the Bible nor the Book of Mormon give a description of God as presented in the later creeds, the Apostle's creed probably being the exception. (unsurprisingly it is very early)The description of God in the Doctrine and Covenants and Joseph's Smith's later teachings also does not appear to coincide with the Book of Mormon. For Mormons this is a non issue as continuing revelation is fundamental to their belief. Coreyb Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 (edited) As someone not well studied in the creeds of Christianity I have an honest question pertaining to the topic. Is it compatible with the creeds for Jesus to appear, and not just appear but visit and interact with objects on a mountain top to the brother of Jared in a spiritual form that is in the likeness of the future physical body that He would take on in a couple thousand years? Also, would it be consistent with the creeds that the brother of Jared could sort of force that visitation by having such faith that the Lord could not hide Himself if He wanted to? Also, is it consistent with the creeds that God could actually fall from His place were He to disobey certain laws? Again these are not rhetorical questions, I actually don't know the answers. Thanks Edited April 19, 2015 by Coreyb

The only thing you are doing so far is proving you don't know a thing about Mormonism. I'm an expert on Mormonism, let me ask you this question, who are the "his children are born of an enlightened race" What Mormon teach about the birth of a handicapped Child and minorities especially in third world countries "This privilege of obtaining a mortal body on this earth is seemingly so priceless that those in the spirit world, even though unfaithful or not valient, were undoubtedly permitted to take mortal bodies although under penalty of racial or physical or nationalistic limitations...." (Decisions for Successful Living pp 164-165) TLDP: 497 “There is no truth more plainly taught in the Gospel than that our condition in the next world will depend upon the kind of lives we live here. …Is it not just as reasonable to suppose that the conditions in which we now live have been determined by the kind of lives we lived in the pre-existent world of spirits? That the apostles understood this principle is indicated by their question to the Master when the man who was blind from his birth was healed of his blindness, ‘Master, who did sin, this man or his parents that he was born blind?’ (John 9:2.) Now perhaps you will have a partial answer to some of your questions as to why, if God is a just Father, that some of his children are born of an enlightened race and in a time when the Gospel is upon the earth, while others are born of a heathen parentage in a benighted, backward country; and still others are born to parents who have the mark of a black skin with which the seed of Cain were cursed and whose descendants were to be denied the rights of the priesthood of God” (Harold B. Kevin Christensen Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 As is usual, the way a person contextualizes and nurtures the seed decisively influences the harvest. Proof-texting sans context has never been a particularly productive way to approach the scriptures. Try, for example, http://www.fairmormon.org/perspectives/fair-conferences/2003-fair-conference/2003-monotheism-messiah-and-mormons-book And it helps to notice what is going on in Benjamin's discourse: http://publications.maxwellinstitute.byu.edu/fullscreen/?pub=1087&index=8 Especially see the discussion of the Day of Atonement. "The name. So holy was the Day of Atonement that on this day the ineffable name of God, YHWH, could be pronounced. During the Yom Kippur service at the temple, the priest could pronounce this sacred name aloud. Later Jewish tradition seems to have the priest utter this name ten times during the Yom Kippur liturgy, and to a similar degree, Benjamin employs the expanded names Lord God and Lord Omnipotent seven and three times, respectively.110 Seven of these utterances are in the reported words of the angel to Benjamin (see Mosiah 3:5, 13, 14, 17, 18, 21, 23). It seems more than coincidental111 that it is in the mouth of an angel that such names appear seven times and that the number seven reflects a "spiritual" perfection. The other three utterances come in the words of Benjamin (see Mosiah 2:30, 41, and 5:15). These three utterances come at important ceremonial breaking points in the speech, not merely at random or inconsequential places.112 The response of the people to the pronouncement of the sacred name was singular. According to the Mishnah, each time the people at the temple in Jerusalem heard the sacred name they would fall prostrate on the ground.113 This can be compared with the reactions to King Benjamin's speech in Zarahemla. When he finished reciting the words of the angel, "he cast his eyes round about on the multitude, and behold they had fallen to the earth, for the fear of the Lord had come upon them" (Mosiah 4:1). It is possible that Benjamin's people would have fallen down in profound reverence and awe several times when Benjamin spoke the holy name of God, as the Israelites did on hearing the tetragram, according to the Mishnah.114" FWIW Kevin ChristensenBethel Park, PA

The Yom Kippur prayer service includes several unique aspects. One is the actual number of prayer services. On a normal day, there are three: evening, morning and afternoon. On Yom Kippur, there are five and a public confession of sins. (A separate prayer book exists for Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah.) There is also a prayer dedicated solely to the Yom Kippur service of the Kohen Gadol in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. The services end with a long blast on the shofar. The number of worshippers in the synagogues often doubles or triples on Yom Kippur. Goldstein says he doesn’t feel a need as a Mormon to observe Yom Kippur because he renews his covenants with God every week through the LDS sacrament service. But more Latter-day Saints “need to be more sensitive to Jews,” he says. Edited April 19, 2015 by HOLY CATHOLIC
Coreyb Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 Those questions are based off teachings and stories found in the Book of Mormon, so it isn't silent. The Bible is rather ambiguous as to answering the first two, and I don't believe that it ever touches on the last question. My questions however are about the creeds you are referring to in the opening post.
