Church Changes Religion Curriculum For Byu, Seminary, Institute.

Any thoughts on the new curriculum being used for church Seminary?  Has anyone seen it to know what the foundation might be for Bill's comments below?

Professor William Hamblin of the BYU College of Religious Education wrote in his blog that he is against the change.

"Personally, I find this new curriculum appalling," he wrote. "It will result in the further decay of scriptural literacy -- already a significant problem among the Saints. Scripture study in the Church has now become nothing more than completely decontextualized proof-texting.

"There is, practically speaking, no further institutional support by the Church for the actual study of scripture -- as opposed to Church doctrine, devotion and daily application."

There is new curriculum being used for seminary but it has nothing to do with anything mentioned in the article. The headline is wrong. Hamblin is talking about proposed changes to BYU religious ed curriculum (which will also carry over to institute)—those changes will not impact seminary.

What would an 84 hour class help you to learn about the Book of Mormon that you could

not learn by just reading it yourself?  What are some of the major intellectual highlights?

And are there any lessons which are backed up by factual references to geography and

archaeology? Or is it based mostly on speculation?

I think just on doctrinal analysis one can spend a lifetime studying the Book of Mormon and find new things. So far a archeological evidences, there's much to say about the Book of Mormon when one asks him or herself, "what Mesoamerican viewpoints does the Book of Mormon teach?"

Hello Jim...

Some of my favorite programs on BYU-TV are the round-table discussions on the BoM, D&C, etc.  There's usually 4 individuals participating, most of whom are associated with BYU as professors of various disciplines, i.e., church history, religion, ancient scripture, etc.  The insights they provide are complementary to anything I could glean from simply reading the texts myself.  It is through these discussions that I have come to realize just how rich the BoM is...
