Canadaigua Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 There was an interesting post by Robert Smith in another thread about Jewish priests from the line of Aaron. I wanted to respond to him in that thread but it was closed before I had a chance. He said in part ". . .the sons of Aaron are priests by lineal right, even in Mormonism. He might want to look in the D&C. They primarily serve the tribe of Judah, but could request full function as a bishop within a Mormon congregation . . ." Do LDS really teach that Non LDS Jewish priests--who do not even believe in Jesus--can they function as LDS bishops?
Storm Rider Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 (edited) I think there is confusion over the time of their functioning as priests in the Kingdom of God. We believe that every knee will bow and every mouth will proclaim that Jesus is the Christ. The possibility exists for those that enter into the Kingdom of God to then function, by birthright, as priests. This could not occur today, but may come to pass in the future. Alan Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 (edited) How would we ever discover a descendent of Aaron in the first place, other than by revelation. Many of the worlds Jews today are descended from European converts to Judaism (the Kazhars for example) and make up the bulk of the current Israeli population, and would carry no Aaronic bloodlines. But why on earth would anyone want to serve as a Bishop without counselors? It's difficult enough as it is. Edited September 12, 2014 by Alan 1
Avatar4321 Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 When the Lord presents one such who can act without counselors, we will be able to give a clearer answer. I should also point out that when He who is a rightful heir of the Melchizedek Priesthood is on earth in the office of President of the High Priesthood, He too can act without counselors. As the rightful heir is Christ, it should be obvious why there was no First Presidency while He walked the earth. He had the right to that office. It's only after His death and resurrection when Peter took over that counselors were called.

I am not sure why you say my title is a bit odd since your quote was in response to my posts in the other thread about non LDS Jewish priests and how that related to animal sacrifices that LDS leaders spoke about in the latter days. Sounds like you are retracting what you have said in the other thread. Perhaps you could clarify your position on this one.

Do LDS really teach that Non LDS Jewish priests--who do not even believe in Jesus--can they function as LDS bishops? No. The official doctrine says: 1–5, The words of the elders when moved upon by the Holy Ghost are scripture; 6–12, Elders are to preach and baptize, and signs will follow true believers; 13–24, The firstborn among the sons of Aaron may serve as the Presiding Bishop (that is, hold the keys of presidency as a bishop) under the direction of the First Presidency; 25–28, Parents are commanded to teach the gospel to their children; 29–35, The Saints are to observe the Sabbath, labor diligently, and pray. https://www.lds.org/scriptures/dc-testament/dc/68.16?lang=eng#15 And: D&C 68:15–21. Under What Conditions Can a Literal Descendant of Aaron Be a Bishop without Counselors? President Joseph Fielding Smith pointed out that this provision applied only to the office of Presiding Bishop of the Church: “It has no reference whatever to bishops of wards. Further, such a one must be designated by the First Presidency of the Church and receive his anointing and ordination under their hands. The revelation comes from the Presidency, not from the patriarch, to establish a claim to the right to preside in this office. In the absence of knowledge concerning such a descendant, any high priest, chosen by the Presidency, may hold the office of Presiding Bishop and serve with counselors.” (Doctrines of Salvation, 3:92.) “The office of Presiding Bishop of the Church is the same as the office which was held by Aaron. … It was this office which came to John the Baptist, and it was by virtue of the fact that he held the keys of this power and ministry that he was sent to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery to restore that Priesthood, May 15, 1829. The person who has the legal right to this presiding office has not been discovered; perhaps is not in the Church, but should it be shown by revelation that there is one who is the ‘firstborn among the sons of Aaron,’ and thus entitled by birthright to this presidency, he could ‘claim’ his ‘anointing’ and the right to that office in the Church.” (Smith, Church History and Modern Revelation, 1:259.)https://www.lds.org/manual/doctrine-and-covenants-student-manual/section-60-68/section-68-scripture-is-the-will-mind-word-voice-and-power-of-god-unto-salvation?lang=eng

Robert F. Smith Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 BTW Technically, levites wouldn't be considered jews since they are from the tribe of Levi and not the tribe of Judah. That's why I said "priests (cohens) among the Jews," since the kohens are an elite subset of the tribe of Levi (Levites, sons of Levi), and they know who they are among the Jews, i.e., the Jewish community. Indeed, it is the senior kohen present in a Jewish congregation on Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) who stands before the congregation, raises his hands in a double Star Trek Spock display (nesiat kappayim), and blesses the congregation (Num 6:23-27): 24 The Lord bless thee, and keep thee:25 The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:26 The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace. That blessing has the same full force and authority today as it had anciently. 1
