A Theory On The Origin Of Adam-God

“I am more afraid that this people have so much confidence in their leaders that they will not inquire for themselves of God whether they are led by him. I am fearful they settle down in a state of blind self security. Let every man and woman know, by the whispering of the Spirit of God to themselves, whether their leaders are walking in the path the Lord dictates, or not.”

-- Brigham Young

Several decades ago, before the internet, there was a BBS called Compuserve and one of the groups was on on Mormonism. One time a woman posted that she spoke to her grandmother in the nursing home and she related an experience by her father (I know, this is third hand but listen anyway).

Brigham Young was visiting the area and told him that he was going to play a "great joke" on the Saints. He did not give any details. Now we know from church history that JS was fond of such "Saint jokes" such as one played on Daniel Wells when he pretended to wandering the streets drunk. BY was an actor in this joke, telling Wells that

"We have alot of problems with the prophet and his drinking". Wells replied that he would prefer a drunk prophet than no prophet at all. BY then congratulated him and told him that this was a test of his faith. (I am not sure of the exact details).

Anyway, this story on Compuserve then clicked with me that Adam-God was this "grand joke" to test the saints. Unfortunately it got out of hand, and he got so involved in it, that it took on a life of its own -- he almost believed it himself.

So, this is my theory. It makes some sense, and based on very sketchy evidence.

I'd like to think you were joking when you wrote this to share what you think but I should probably realize you were honestly sharing what you think and your comments are a reflection of where you are intellectually.

Maybe someday you'll know what Joseph really believed.

Wow.  That was incredibly rude.  Why don't you share with us your special knowledge of what Joseph really believed?

Everything he said at King Follett's funeral, for one thing, and I'll refrain from getting into other issues in this thread.

Then really you have no foundation to stand on for which to challenge what I have asserted in this thread.

To be frank, I have no interest in "making a stand" on your assertion  ==>>

Adam is Eloheim is a false doctrine, and I have learned to move on from there. It is sufficient to understand that Adam is Michael, that he is the father of all, and, under the direction of Eloheim and Christ, he assisted in the creation of this world.

These are settled issues.

Now let me get back to trying to understand eternity, infinity, and death before Adam.  For example, when Adam was expelled from the Garden, he crossed over some boundary.  What exactly was that boundary?

It is clear that Brigham taught Adam God not withstanding the poor apologetic attempts to explain it alwaymor as something it wasn't (see BC Space's links above.).

Was it a joke or test? Maybe. A very bad one that has caused lots of problems.

Personally I don't beleive it nor did I ever. However, given the development of the theology of God once being a man, external progression, plural marriage as part of exaltation, those becoming gods creating worlds for their spirit children as our God has....well Adam God fits right into that. The hardest thing about it in that pattern for me was the ideas that a being that had been mortal, exalted and was now a god came to our earth, Becem mortal agian and died again.
