It is interesting to me that the vast majority of Mormons do not approve of Obama. Could a majority of the Saints be wrong on this matter? What do those that approve of Obama think of their fellow Saints? Can we discuss this without getting political? Could a majority of the Saints be wrong on this matter? That's not exactly surprising for a number of really obvious reasons. Most mormons are republican. The last republican to run was a practicing mormon. And a good number of mormons, particularly in western states such as ID, UT, and AZ are largely surround by those with similar views. What happens is that it gets pretty negative. I don't think it's necessarily about right or wrong and more about very biased in their opinions. Some of the opinions that I've heard from LDS folk/family who disapprove aren't all that coherent, a couple have verged on abject ignorance. But because there's very little opposing voices, the crazier opinions stick around. The Muslim approval is also not that surprising. Their religion has been used (maligned) in various ways to enhance disapproval about Obama. Obama's generally acted very even keel when these moments come up. And being a minority religion in the U.S. that's gotten a pretty bad rap and has faced prejudice regularly, he's probably a breath of fresh air. What do those that approve of Obama think of their fellow Saints?I'm not excessively approving, but I don't think he's all that bad either. I think it depends. I usually am extremely uncomfortable when the topic comes up and it leans toward vitriolic disapproval (ie. hate/bashing). It doesn't help that my family is uber conservative and every little thing that he does is met with calls of him being something god-awful and in need of impeachment. The worse sounds borderline offensive/bigoted and definitely ignorant. Frankly, I generally ignore them and think that discussing with them is a waste....even when the most that I usually do is correct their "facts" (and I mean facts, like misquoting Obama's book to make him look like he's pushing a Muslim agenda or explaining that when Obama went to a number of African countries that weren't even close to Kenya that it doesn't mean he's vacationing in his homeland on tax dollars....yeah that sort of stupid) I'll usually be attacked by others (not fam) or met with mild incredulity that a smart good LDS girl could be so woefully misinformed. So I might be a little sensitive about it. For most that are a little less loco, I don't think much about it. It's their opinion, nothing more...sometimes I do think a number of the op's are a little harsh or put too much of the weight on him. The only thing I find disgusting or disturbing is complete falsehoods and when religion is mixed in to their reasonings. Can we discuss this without getting political? I don't think he's a horrible person, i just don't think he's a very good president. However, yes, i think it's very possible for the majority of mormons to be wrong about something. It's possible for the majority of any group to be wrong. That's why pure democracies are such a frightening thing. 3
