altersteve Posted September 22, 2013 Posted September 22, 2013 I've been asked to give a talk in sacrament next week (I was going to do it today but won't be able to make it to church today) and I've chosen the topic of believing in yourself, going after your dreams, and not listening to critics, a subject which means a lot to me. I've found a few examples of scriptures that touch on this, but I'd like to hear some feedback from all of you. Thoughts?
emarkp Posted September 22, 2013 Posted September 22, 2013 My belief is in Christ. Not in me. If I'm doing what He wants, critics are irrelevant. If I have His approval, I need no other. 2 Ne 4:19 And when I desire to rejoice, my heart groaneth because of my sins; nevertheless, I know in whom I have trusted. 1
altersteve Posted September 22, 2013 Author Posted September 22, 2013 (edited) I'm talking about the divine light inside each of us. About realizing that you're worth something and that God wouldn't have put you on this world if he didn't think you could change it. That's something worth talking about and believing in. We don't hear about it in church often enough. Edited September 22, 2013 by altersteve 1

They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. TAO Posted September 22, 2013 Posted September 22, 2013 Kinda long, but... http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/ether/12?lang=eng 23 And I said unto him: Lord, the Gentiles will mock at these things, because of our weakness in writing; for Lord thou hast made us mighty in word by faith, but thou hast not made us mighty in writing; for thou hast made all this people that they could speak much, because of the Holy Ghost which thou hast given them; 24 And thou hast made us that we could write but little, because of the awkwardness of our hands. Behold, thou hast not made us mighty in writing like unto the brother of Jared, for thou madest him that the things which he wrote were mighty even as thou art, unto the overpowering of man to read them. 25 Thou hast also made our words powerful and great, even that we cannot write them; wherefore, when we write we behold our weakness, and stumble because of the placing of our words; and I fear lest the Gentiles shall mock at our words. 26 And when I had said this, the Lord spake unto me, saying: Fools mock, but they shall mourn; and my grace is sufficient for the meek, that they shall take no advantage of your weakness; 27 And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them. 28 Behold, I will show unto the Gentiles their weakness, and I will show unto them that faith, hope and charity bringeth unto me—the fountain of all righteousness. 29 And I, Moroni, having heard these words, was comforted, and said: O Lord, thy righteous will be done, for I know that thou workest unto the children of men according to their faith; 1
pogi Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 I always thought this was an interesting one: "Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth." (Rom 14:22)
Bob Crockett Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 (edited) Read the poem "Invictus," which is occasionally quoted in conference, and then Orson F Whitney's rejoinder, which is often overlooked. Two great poems when read back to back. Out of the night that covers me,Black as the pit from pole to pole,I thank whatever gods may beFor my unconquerable soul.In the fell clutch of circumstanceI have not winced nor cried aloud.Under the bludgeonings of chanceMy head is bloody, but unbowed.Beyond this place of wrath and tearsLooms but the Horror of the shade,And yet the menace of the yearsFinds and shall find me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate,How charged with punishments the scroll,I am the master of my fate:I am the captain of my soul. versus Whitney's: Art thou in truth? Then what of Him who bought thee with His blood?Who plunged into devouring seasAnd snatched thee from the flood,Who bore for all our fallen raceWhat none but Him could bear-That God who died that man might liveAnd endless glory share.Of what avail thy vaunted strengthApart from His vast might?Pray that His light may pierce the gloomThat thou mayest see aright.Men are as bubbles on the wave,As leaves upon the tree,Thou, captain of thy soul! Forsooth,Who gave that place to thee?Free will is thine-free agency,To wield for right or wrong; But thou must answer unto HimTo whom all souls belong.Bend to the dust that ‘head unbowed, ‘Small part of life’s great whole,And see in Him and Him alone,The captain of thy soul.
