Nothing is stopping people from studying those now. Why do they need to be canonised?

 

Because not adding them to the canon would allow people to use the safety valve on

easy non-believism ... i.e. "those do not represent official teachings or beliefs of the

church". This is true of some older publications of past LDS Presidents (especially

Doctrines of Salvation, Gospel Doctrine, and earlier versions of Teachings of the

Prophet Joseph Smith, which have not been 'sterilized' so to speak). I believe that

the early saints would view the non-distribution by the current LDS Church as an

apostasy.

So you want to add them to cannon in the hope of making them official, binding doctrine?

Even stuff in the scriptures isn't binding. Do your women cover their heads in church? Do you use wine for sacrament?

Always strange to me when nonmembers are telling members what they should believe and do as members...here to the point of telling us what scriptures we need to add to our collection of continuing revelation when, if I understand him correctly he rejects the very premse of an open canon and new scriptures (though it is sad to say that in my impression the plains is more engaged in telling LDS about their faith than sharing and being an evangelical for his understanding of the gospel, so it may be possible I am wrong).

I think adding important items like these to the D&C would make it easier for saints all over the world to study them, in their own language. Mormonism (including the more controversial/interesting aspects of it) is not just a north american oddity to be studied and examined by educated English speakers, while a watered down version is exported to the rest of the world. Let Bolivians, Latvians, Indians, Fijians and Filipinos all have easy access to all the important documents of this dispensation. I think canonizing things and translating others is a great way to go about it. Not trying to steady no ark though
