Really Stupid Question (Maybe.)

I've had a slight touch of acid indigestion, or heartburn, or maybe something else tonight.

But I've often wondered if the burning in the bosom could be described as a well timed, Divinely caused physical sensation?

I was praying earlier.

Could this indigestion be the answer?

Could it be the burning in the bosom?

Back when I was taking some prescription sleeping pills, and took some pain medication at bed time, I once had a sleep walking incident where I swallowed some rubbing alcohol thinking it was milk, and I had periodic acid reflux for a long time after that.

This kinda feels like a milder version of the same thing, but could it be something else?

Am I right to think of the burning in the bosom as a well timed physical sensation (like heartburn) caused by the HG, or is it something wholly different from heartburn?

Would I be able to recognize the difference the first time?

"Burning in the bosom" is a really poor attempt to describe an experience which, in reality, transcends words, as are other such attempts, such as, "Whisperings of the spirit." (They come as close to describing a transcendent experience with the Spirit as possible, and the Lord used this language, but in reality, there are no words which adequately describe such experiences).

There's no relation between heartburn and burning in the bosom.

For additional scriptures on how the Holy Spirit works, see the following:

Doctrine & Covenants 8:2-3

Doctrine & Covenants 9:8

Doctrine & Covenants 85:6

John 14:6

Galatians 5:22-23

I would say there is no pain associated with feeling the Spirit in what is described as 'burning in the bosom'. I've had both and there is really nothing similar in the experience. It is closer to the feeling you get when you feel like you belong, are loved, make a connection with someone...only that someone is the Spirit and so is much more.

I have acid reflux. It is nothing like the experience of the Holy Ghost.

From my experience, the "burning in the bosom" is not merely a feeling of warmth or discomfort in my belly, rather the peace and clarity that is associated with the presence of God.

Now let me go off on a tangent for a moment. At times when I have been asked to administer to an individual I would begin to ask God what he desired for me to pray, or what was the individual I was seeking comfort for experiencing. My body would begin to ache in a very specific place and I would seek confirmation from the individual saying: "Are you experiencing such and such pain?" Surprisingly I would nail it (or realize what God was showing me regarding where the individual was hurting) and have greater clarity in the exact prayer I was to pray!

Hope this makes sense!

Could this indigestion be the answer?

Could it be the burning in the bosom?

A bit of rancid meat or a spot of gravy perhaps? Haven't seen it posted yet so check this out:

31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?

When I think of the burning in the bosom thing my mind first goes to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, "Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?" I don't think that these two disciples actually had their hearts burn, but I recognize and understand what they mean without being able to translate it to another. Critics will oft accuse believers of creating a feeling or pose what they perceive as a conundrum that others also receive a spiritual experience yet belong to another faith. Then follow with, "where is God in this?". The Holy Spirit guides and is the source of all truth regardless of where truth is found in the world. The interaction with the Spirit is a palpable sensation. It is true that the evil one does attempt to misguide, confuse, or guide others in wrong paths, but I honestly believe that our challenge in this life is to learn to distinguish between the whisperings of the Holy Spirit and all other things. It is coming to know the voice of God, recognize our Master's call amidst the cacophony of mortality that is our goal.
