cinepro Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 (edited) When Joseph Smith tells the story of getting the Aaronic priesthood from John the Baptist and subsequently being baptized, he says: 70 [John the Baptist] said this Aaronic Priesthood had not the power of laying on hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost, but that this should be conferred on us hereafter; and he commanded us to go and be baptized, and gave us directions that I should baptize Oliver Cowdery, and that afterwards he should baptize me.https://www.lds.org/scriptures/pgp/js-h/1?lang=engDoes anyone know when they received the gift of the Holy Ghost? Is it ever stated, or just assumed that they got it from Peter, James and John? Edited February 17, 2013 by cinepro
longview Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 It seems to me that when the Church was formally organized on 6 Apr 1830, everyone was baptized as a condition for membership, some for second time. Those baptized previously obtained only the remission of sins. New members received the laying on of hands for the gift of HG.
CV75 Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 When Joseph Smith tells the story of getting the Aaronic priesthood from John the Baptist and subsequently being baptized, he says:Does anyone know when they received the gift of the Holy Ghost? Is it ever stated, or just assumed that they got it from Peter, James and John?It could be that he got it without the laying on of hands (as in 3 Nephi 9:20, Moses 6:66), since the ordinance of confirmation as we know it today came later (D&C 20 was given in April 1830).
Doctrine 612 Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 I have been doing some studies of many journals and all the clues i can find about the restoration of the MP, and I have come to a conclusion, the MP was Restored Durring the Early hours of Monday, June 1, 1829. And that is also when the Holy Ghost was given to them. Some of the clues I have read talk about them leaving Harmony, Pa to escape persucusion, so they traveled to feyette, new york, and many accounts say that that happend On May 30-June 1, 1829. a few weeks after the Aaronic Preisthood was restored. and they were very tired. Now just a Note, this is just a educated guess from study, and my own conclusion, but we have to start some where.
Questing Beast Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 A good educated guess it is. But there simply is not any recorded info to pin such a question down with an answer. That, among other "lost" information, is why JS turned the Church into a record-keeping church. I forget exactly where he explained that earlier they had not taken that responsibility seriously enough and that he was repenting, so that the Saints would have all knowledge and not be in the power of their enemies through ignorance (words to that effect).... 1
salvar774 Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 i got into a dissusion with a Sunday school teacher about the first vision and the holy ghost . I asked if the Holy Ghost was present during the first vision. He said that he was not . He said that no where is any book was he mentioned . I told him the Holy Ghost had to be present , or the whole first vision is impossible .By the same token , just because the exact moment is not recorded , it does not mean it never happen .I would venture to say that J.S was given the Holy Ghost since day 1.
cinepro Posted February 18, 2013 Author Posted February 18, 2013 I told him the Holy Ghost had to be present , or the whole first vision is impossible .How so?
