Lost Pages, Lost Child?

In listening to "Martin Harris, a portrait of humility and repentance," I noticed that Joseph and Emma lost a child around the same time that Joseph lost the 116 pgs.

Was that a coincidence, or was it meant to be a sign of God's displeasure?

Does everything that happens have some meaning, purpose, or message?

Doubt it. Infant and child mortality in those days was woefully high.

Just a sign of the times...many children died young in the 1800's.

God does not punish me by punishing my child.

The Old Testament does seem to imply that a child can suffer for the sins of the parent, such as the death of the firstborn in Egypt and David and Bethsheba's firstborn, but it is not something that ever made spiritual sense to me, especially with the teachings we have. I don't believe that the sin of the parents is a spiritual curse handed down, but a consequence of poor parental teachings and behaviour.

Plus, I don't think God would punish anyone in such a way without even telling them he was doing so. What would the purpose be if the person was clueless about it?
