It is customary to pay them after all.Do they pay them in other countries? It is a custom that can be changed, if you do not volunteer but are drafted, you get room and board.I agree that it is very impractical at this time, the infrastructure is not in place. It would have to be something worked up to.

The last thing I'd want to do is to give a really pissed off recruit a weapon.It created our greatest generation in WWII.

Sadly it will and all too many in the world will be happy to make it happen...we have become weak and disconnected, something Israel can never afford to be again. Putin knows this and is counting on it, that we will know longer have a greatest generation.

Japan could (and did) conquer various United States territorial possessions, seize control of sea traffic in the Pacific, and a military that could threaten the United States. Al Qaeda pulled off a one-shot attack in an innovative way that will never work again. Their ability to threaten United States citizens is minute by comparison. People who want to see the "War" on Terror (quotes intentional as it is not a war) as another World War II are overdramatic. Bin Laden was no Hitler and Hussein was no Tojo. Even Mussolini posed a bigger threat. The Messiah will save Israel when the time is right and after they have been sorely chastened. He does not need our help in keeping it from dying.This of course assumes that the modern political state of Israel is the gathering of the Jews to their homeland. I am not entirely convinced that it is the prophesied return. If the nation ends the prophecies will still come to pass.

Combat soldiers get paid more (as do those with no family, etc.), but it is still pretty much for "shoe polish and shaving cream," as my officers put it. Public transportation, however, is free, and many places will give soldiers some discounts. Gratitude certainly plays its part for those, but if you consider that the kid in uniform might be your son's friend sort of thing (what else in a small country with the draft), that is definitely incentive.

Volunteers would be the only ones allowed in combat, draftees could be limited to noncombat zones and placed in less critical positions, at least until they prove their commitment.Everyone in the military gets firearms training.
