ERayR Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 I want to get my comments in before this thread gets shut down...I am livid over Reid's comments about Romney... Reid is an abject hypocrite. His history with some land deals raised eyebrows some years ago. But the picture I will never get over is how Reid came walking out to the podium and proceeded to lie about Romney in saying that "the cat was out of the bag" that Romney had not payed taxes for the last ten years... that he had this information from a "reliable" source... blah blah blah... totally false, yet he stood there spewing forth this vitriolic lie to all the world. Shame on him then, and shame on him now...GGHe certainly seems to have trouble with veracity and humility. That he does.
mtomm Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 Well, GG were you completely livid at Romney for being a hypocrite when he called for his opponent to release her and her husbands tax returns but refused to release his own, and then had the audacity to ask what they were hiding when the husband didn't release his? Were you livid when he didn't claim all of his charitable deductions because it would have lowered his tax rate snd that was not politically expedient? Were you livid at the hipocrisy when he said that if a person paid more taxes than they needed to that they weren't qualified to be POTUS and that is exactly what his 2011 return indicates he did? Were you livid when he disparaged 47% of the electorate, and many fellow LDS members, in front of wealthy donors because it was politically expedient and he thought no one would ever know?See, I'd say it's best that neither Romney nor Reid be the faces of Mormonism.
urroner Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 In my opinion, what Reid said actually helps the church. I've seen countless articles in the news where people assume that everything about Romney can be explained by Mormonism. Whether it is fair or not, lots of people perceive Romney as being elitist and uncaring. My guess is that Reid was fed up with his religion being associated with Romney in so many people's minds so he spoke out against it. I think this will help the church by helping people see the diversity within Mormonism and help people not assume that all Mormons think like Romney. Whether or not it was ethical for Reid to say what he said is a different matter. I'd say it was unacceptable for him to say that Romney sullied our religion, but I agree that it is bad for Romney to be seen as the face of Mormonism. Mormonism has many faces.Well, with the way Obama's mainstream media toadies and boot lickers are treating and depicting Romney as an elitist and uncaring, I can see where people get that perception of him, even if it is, and probably is, absolutely false.Reid, as a life long politician should have kept his mouth shut. I think he is doing more harm to the Church than Romney is. Most of the people I work with, and since I live in the South, the majority of them is Evangelical, have greater respect for Romney then they have for Reid, especially since Reid has started popping off at the mouth.Romney hasn't brought his or Obama's religions into discussion, but Reid is more than pleased to do so. I have a bad feeling that Reid is going to reap the whirlwind with the seeds of contempt he is sowing while he claims that Romney is ignoble and is extremely despicable.
urroner Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 See, I'd say it's best that neither Romney nor Reid be the faces of Mormonism.Did Romney ever say that he wanted to be the face of Mormonism? I have never heard his say that, but I guess you have. But with Reid flapping his gums before the whole world, telling it that Romney has sullied Mormonism, maybe he is trying to accept that lofty calling.

However the last time I looked it wasn't illegal to pay extra taxes. One might get some insight into the kind of people they are by comparing their personal giving.Edited to add:Mitt Romney's presidential campaign is releasing a brief summary of 20 years of tax returns on Friday, and his accountant says it will show he gave 13.45 percent of his adjusted gross income to charities. That's nearly twice the rate of President Obama, who according to his tax returns from 2000 through 2011 donated just less than 7 percent of his adjusted gross income to charities.Read more: Romney doubles Obama's charitable giving - Washington Times http://www.washingto.../#ixzz27XPAZELjOn the personal side Obama is a bit stingy but he is extremely generous with other peoples money.

This is the first I've heard about Romney demanding to have the Obamas releasing theirs -- because they did so quite some time ago. So what on earth are you talking about?Reid said that Romney hasn't paid taxes for 10 years, citing an anonymous source he considered truthful; then Romney released certified information about his taxes that proved that Reid was spreading lies. The "47%" thing was an awkwardly worded statement that Romney himself admitted could have been stated better. The Dems are bitterly complaining that Obama's "You didn't build that!" remark is being taken out of context -- well, are they going to take the moral high ground and admit that Romney mispoke. I'd be willing to assume that Obama misspoke. I will come right out and say that what Romney is being pilloried for having meant by his 47% remark is probably true! You think that 47% of the US population are NOT getting some sort of government payment? That number might even be understated. I myself am a state government employee, and I freely tell you that I am in a certain sense as much on the dole as someone receiving government assistance, with the big difference being that I actually produce a work product (computer software in my case). We would be far better off if more people were actually contributing to the economy's growth rather than be parasites on it! The other thing is that if you are opposed to Romney, then of course you don't believe what he is saying is true (even if it is), and therefore he is lying! But there is a lot of subjectiveness in there.
jwhitlock Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 There is nothing wrong or immoral about stating a truthful claim towards another member of the Church.Since Reid's comments were not factual, but a subjective opinion given solely for political gain, this hardly applies to him.

I agree with what Stargazer posted... I cannot say what I really think or the thread would get shut down immediately ( ) because it would be considered too political. So suffice it to say that I believe that Romney, whether LDS or not, has the best experience for turning things around... I've listened to the various pundits on the economy and jobs, and numerous other issures, so it's not like I'm approaching this lightly or without some reasonable views. And yes, I'm still livid when it comes to Reid...GG

Pretty sandy foundation you're standing on there.

urroner Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 On the personal side Obama is a bit stingy but he is extremely generous with other peoples money.I'm shocked, shocked to think that you are capable of saying something like that about the President who is very generous and wants to protect those who support him, What is wrong with that?

urroner Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 It is a relatively odd concept that charity and generosity should be done with ones own resources instead of confiscated funds. It's not about his generosity, rather it's about him teaching us to be generous and loving, even if he has to enforce it and the whipping will not stop until our attitudes improve. And yes, I'm still livid when it comes to Reid...GGIt's interesting to note in all of this that some (hopefully very few) members of the Church, including now Harry Reid, place emphasis on a certain kind of political affiliation as a test for faithful Church membership. This happens on both sides of the aisle from time to time and should be roundly condemned in every situation. While some Republican church members are more often accused of this because they tend to be in the majority, it is clear that some Democrat church members are also willing to exhibit this flaw. One hopes that Romney will simply ignore Reid; there are plenty of other people out there who are more than willing to take Reid to task for his hypocrisy, and I hope he gets soundly hammered for it.As has been noted, most of Romney's perceived flaws have been amplified by his enemies for political gain. While both sides have engaged in some of this, I find it particularly odious that the attack dogs that have been unleashed on Romney feel that his religion and it's adherents are fair game for their slander. Evidently some on this thread agree with that attack dog methodology, since they have blindly bought into that slander hook, line, and sinker. Anyone defending Reid's comments here should be absolutely ashamed of themselves.

DavidB Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 You were the one who made the statement/accusation. If you don't want corrections of accusations to be posted, don't be incorrect. Can you show where I did not want coreections posted...no you cant. The truthfulness of what caused the ire of the OP does not seem to be an issue, rather the ire superficially seems to be that one member accused another. So whether or not I was 100% accurate with my characterization of one member accusing another, it does not matter, one member accused another.

That is the number that receive an income tax refund in excess of income taxes paid in. Refund in excess of paid in (reverse income taxes commonly called tax credits) sounds like some kind of dole.
mtomm Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 Why are you bringing Pres. Obama in to this thread? I'm pointing out that Romney has done some things that some LDS people find to be not a good refection on our faith. Those things are not tied to his charitable giving or Pres Obama's. Deflecting is always an option I guess. And Romney's tax summary was released last Friday not this Friday.
mtomm Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 I'll wait for the hard numbers. But it needs to be a good hard analysis and not something shallow. And I get to determine what is shallow and what isn't, then I can just dimiss summarily."That is the number that receive an income tax refund in excess of income taxes paid in. Refund in excess of paid in (reverse income taxes commonly called tax credits) sounds like some kind of dole."I do Know what the EITC is. You should look up who's idea that was.

mtomm Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 They are only propaganda because you don't like them. It wouldn't matter if I cited a thousand sources, you'd claim they are all biased. Now if I was to say that the reason the Romney's won't release their tax returns is because they took the 2009 tax amnesty deal from the IRS, then you could say I was just using contrived propaganda because there is no way to prove that.

Or does your bias not allow you to do that?
