We're continuing to explore new venues for the discussion of Mormonism and its scriptures. This one was an experiment. I think it's quite promising.

It is. May I make a suggestion about the Interpreter? The last time I checked the website it had one article on the web page that one can read. It may be best to get several articles and then post these articles as a table of contents so people can see the complete issue and volume number and access the article they wish to read. This would give it a more academic journal look.

Take a look again. Interpreter is posting a new article every week. The Journal volume is the accumulation of the articles up to a particular cut off point, at which time one might decide to do a print-on-demand to get a hardcopy, or continue to read online.

Each article is available in multiple electronic formats.

When a new article is posted, it becomes the featured piece as you enter Interpreter, but others are listed as well. The Journal page has the table of contents with hot links. I think they have already put together the things you are looking for. Let us know if that isn't what you are seeing.

I more listened than watched, but I enjoyed it.

A couple things I thought could have helped make it more interesting is if there was more back-and-forth discussion. It seemed certain people would put out their talking points, and then everyone else (usually Dan) would say "Hmm... interesting. Anyone else?" and then we would get silence, so they would move on to the next topic. I think it would have been nice to get people building on other comments, responding to others comments, even disagreeing and countering each other's comments and offering a different take/perspective.

There was a little bit of that, but I think there could have been more, and that would have made it more interesting.

I watched about 10 minutes of the video (can' continue right now) and I must say, you have a VERY pretty bedroom. Did you decorate it yourself? ;)

Short answer--my wife lets me decorate my own office, but nothing else. Longer answer, I purchased a webcam to be able to do this from my office (where I would at least have the obligatory bookcase as a backdrop!). However, the computer didn't like the extra load and everything froze. So--on to my wife's computer. The night before ti worked just fine during a test. Then, just as we were beginning, her webcam stopped. I had to go get mine installed at the last possible moment. That isn't part of answering the question, save to indicate why I broadcast from the bedroom rather than the office!

We are obviously experimenting with this. I think that the current intent is to give a little bit of enrichment to Gospel Doctrine teachers, and so I'm not sure how they would understand a scholarly debate over the topics. Besides, for much of what we talked about, I think we pretty much agreed.

We have had a few discussions about having some type of video that would go deeper into the material, and I suspect that would be more to your liking.

With as many edifying things I have seen coming out of the Interpreter organization of late, I am thinking of sending a letter of appreciation to Jerry Bradford for making this all happen.:)

Have you considered soliciting question from the viewing public in advance of each session and specific to the content of the up-coming session?

For example, I would have liked to have asked beforehand for your respective thoughts about the Laminites being turned white in Chapter 2 (given the controversy about "white and delightsome") as well as the raising of the dead in Chapter 7 (which predates Christ's resurrection and may be contemporary with the raising of Lazarus).

Dan looked a bit sleepy-eyed in the beginning. Then it occurred to me he was probably looking down at his computer screen to monitor the transmission.

Except for that trivial quibble, I say good work, and I look forward to more. Bring it on.

After we finished we talked about other things that might be done, and having questions was certainly one of them. Anyone with questions for upcoming Gospel Doctrine lessons, let me know and I'll pass them on.

As for the two specific things you mentioned. I decided to avoid the white Lamanite issue as that is something that I believe requires a larger analysis. It wasn't going to let other things be discussed.

As for raising the dead, I personally think that there was a known set of types for a Messiah-on-earth, and resurrection/power over death was one. That becomes symbolically foreshadowed in Nephi's action. It becomes a sign that the Nephite religion has the power to declare/accept the Messiah.

It can't! I am my own scripture commentator/interpreter. I find other people's commentary/interpretation boring! :)

I think it would be great if you could make the audio available for downloading as an MP3 file.

I agree, the video adds very little.

I watched. Boring!

So how could it be better?

I wanted to see Daniel Peterson in his avatar's costume.

I think this illustrates why videophones haven't caught on much.

It's interesting to put a face to a couple more names I didn't have before. Ben McGuire looks way different than I pictured him.
