  1. 1. Men's haircuts

    • Men should definitely have short hair - it's scriptural

    • Men should ideally have short hair, but it isn't a major issue

    • It's a matter of little or no importance

I drove my son to the airport yesterday after a week of goofing off and enjoying his leave before his next assignment. After a week of 2AM video game sessions, junk food and not shaving I looked like a beach bum.

It took longer to get to the airport than I anticipated so I wandered into the ward for the last 10 minutes of priesthood, with a weeks worth of facial hair and in a Hawaiian shirt. It was priceless!

:D I'll bet you got more attention than usual. See, there's a bright side!

Well what to say about the iconography of Jesus Christ in LDS picture...

This is our model, I think... :P

Except for the occasional 1" trim job, I haven't cut my hair in almost 5 years. When it's wet, it stretches down past the middle of my back to about my T9 vertebrae. When it dries, it gets extremely curly (corkscrew curls) that still stretch to between my shoulder blades. I also frequently wear a full beard or partial beard (although, at present, I am clean shaven).

I currently serve as the ward organist and the gospel doctrine instructor. The second counselor in the Stake Presidency is my home teacher. The bishop is my neighbor, and I know him very well. I'm also very well acquainted with the stake president and his other counselor. None of them have ever said a word to me about my long hair being a problem.

When I was on the stake high council (or maybe after then, when I was serving as the stake executive secretary -- about 8-9 years ago) I personally read, in stake PEC, a letter from the First Presidency stipulating that hair length and facial hair were NOT to be a consideration when calling men to ANY position (except working in the temple).

I have an unrelated question. Do you own a Les Paul?

I have an unrelated question. Do you own a Les Paul?

Nope. But I'm always on the lookout for one. Right now, however, if I had a spare $3500, I would not buy a Gibson. I just don't think the currently manufactured Gibson guitars are worth the money they charge for them. What I am going to buy, probably as my Christmas present, is a Giffin Valiant, which is the quality of guitar Gibson ought to be making: Giffin Valiant.

Here's a photo of a Valiant:

Listen to the samples at the link I posted above. Roger Giffin, in my opinion, makes the finest Les Paul-sounding guitars on the market today. Read about him here: Roger Giffin.

I currently own an American Deluxe Stratocaster, HSS, cherry sunburst, standard Strat 25 1/2" scale length. Very nice guitar. Also a late 70s Yamaha SA2100 (an ES-335 copy, black with ivory binding and gold hardware), 24 5/8" scale length. The Japanese-made Yamaha ES-335 copies from that era are widely considered to be superior to the Gibsons of the same era, and as good as 335s of any era. It's a great guitar. I've also got a pre-Fender Tacoma D-38 (a lot like a Gibson Hummingbird, fat, rich sound). I've got a 1980 Ovation Custom Balladeer that I played for 25 years until it developed a crack on the top. Too bad. It was also a great guitar and developed a full, rich sound the older it got.. I've also got a really nice Ibanez acoustic with a cutaway (only cost me $350!) that I use for travel and camping, etc. For being a cheap guitar, I really like it. It's got 24 3/4" scale length and it's pretty small, which makes it good for traveling and camping, etc. I've also got a 80s-era P-Bass strung with flat-wounds.

That's it. Some day I'm sure I'll find a Les Paul that has the sound I'm looking for. Problem is I want one LP with P-90s and another one with the '59 style BurstBuckers. I've played both the 59 reissue, like this one:

And the 1960 reissue, like this one:

I think I like the 1960 reissue better, but if someone wants to give me a '59, I won't refuse it. ;)

In fact, I'd especially like it if Don Felder would will me his when he goes to the great Hotel California in the sky:

How funny... from your posts I would never have guessed that you had long hair, Will...

Hair length is a social convention, and is unrelated to righteousness. But if I was in the market for a high paying job in the corporate world. I'd look around at what other male high level officers of that corporation were doing with their hair.

So Christ was "social"?

I think certain guys can pull off different hair styles. It depends on what you're comfortable with. I remember when I lived in Flagstaff, AZ there was a couple in my ward who did dreds with their hair. I thought it was awesome.

Personally, I like really short hair or shaved heads. It's very masculine to me. Then again I also like tattoo sleeves and that is bound to get me into trouble. I'm working on my beard and trying to grow out my chin hair to an obnoxious length.

My mother hates my tastes:

Phil Anselmo of Pantera

Jesse James

I totally agree with your mother.

My hair is long enough that I would not be able to attend BYU or serve a mission unless I cut out holes for my ears. I honestly have no idea who the Church thinks still associates long hair on men/boys itself with social defiance, so I predict a change in policy in the future. As much as I want to predict the same for temple workers having beards (I have a thick beard and it irritates my skin to shave it daily, so I look forward to the day that I no longer care enough about my appearance to continue shaving), we still have an old reputation to run from and I don't think we will have escaped it by the time I'm old enough to retire and become a regular temple worker.

As a side note, I've created a list of people who are ineligible to attend Brigham Young University, the Lord's University, because of their hair.

  • Brigham Young

BY yes...we have no idea what Christ looked like, although I am sure he had facial hair as I do.

You made me laugh when you agreed with my mother. I won't ask you your taste but I'm sure we would disagree.

But if he looked anything like he does in the paintings, he would not be able to attend BYU. The fact that the way he is depicted in the paintings is acceptable means that it wouldn't be a problem if he really did look that way.

I think Christ would get a pass, or anyone up to David O...(but I think they would gladly conform) but do you agree there should be some standards, and if so where do (or would you) draw the line? Like it or not BYU students represent the Church, just as missionaries do...even the non- members. Are you ok with no drugs, not pants around your knees? Edited by Bill “Papa” Lee

After a stint in the US Air Force, BYU grooming standards were easy. ;)

Other that more facial hair, I still groom to military standards...eight years is hard to get out of your learned behavior. Edited by Bill “Papa” Lee

My hair is a little longer, my mustache a little bushier, and both have turned gray, but I essentially look the same. Anyone not knowing me personally would be hard pressed to pick me out of a lineup of High Priests. :)
