Americans' aversion to voting for Mormons has spiked since Mitt Romney's first presidential bid in 2007 — and that the people most wary of Mormon candidates are not Evangelicals, but rather political liberals and non-religious voters, according to new research from a leading scholar of anti-Mormon attitudes.

The overall increase in anti-Mormon attitudes among liberals may be an unanticipated consequence of the "the continuing candidacy of Mitt Romney and Mormon activism against same-sex marriage," the study suggests. And its findings may be alarming to the Romney campaign because among the study's other findings is that voters' perceptions of Mormonism are closely tied to whether they'll vote for him.

Who'd have thunk it?

Liberals don't like LDS? This must be wrong. I know that liberals, aka "progressives" have an exapansive tolerance for all people and all ways of life. They are the benevelent, nearly sainted people that only care about serving others as long as they can tax you for their pet projects and as long as you think exactly how they think. As long as you agree with them they are as tolerant as.... well, as a member of any other highly elitist group.

As the article points out, liberals are still pretty ticked off with the churches activism in passing prop 8. They don't really want a Mormon pushing their religion on them like the church did in passing prop 8. Mormons would not like, say, a gay presidential canidate pushing their ideology on Mormons..

The other issue is, that Romney is Republican, a political party that is out of step wiith their views on how government should be run. Perhaps if Romney was a Democrat and the chruch did not have Prop 8 baggage, the survey would be completely different. Is it really that surprising that those supporting gay marriage would not be all warm and fuzzy towards the Mormon church?

It's not surprising. In order to accept the doctrines of the Church, one must strip themselves entirely of liberal and/or atheist ideology.

There is a difference between "not accepting the doctrines of the church" and actually "hating Mormons". I don't see many liberals "hating Mormons"...but, I do see them vigorously opposing their stand on gay rights and other issues, important to them.

I am a liberal and I do not hate Mormons (or anyone else, for that matter).

The injunction against lightmindedness doesn't mean our sarcasm has to be heavy. :)

Yes (non classical) We can go down the list:

Socialism

Government Dole

Private Property

War

Feminism (third wave and higher)

Homosexuality

Capital punishment

etc.

Happy to discuss any liberal ideological position on these issues vis a vis LDS doctrine all of which are in absolute and complete conflict with fundamental LDS doctrines, usually agency and morality.

Does this include democrats as well?

You tell me.

Yes, I think the title is a little vague. Considering liberal reaction to Mormonism (and anything else they disagree with), it's not an inaccurate supposition, but it comes from a deep seated aversion to what the LDS Church stands for at the very least. Others have stood for the same types of things so the LDS Church is not the only group on their aversion list.

(What it actually states is that more liberals and atheists than a few years ago have negative feelings towards Mormons. Obviously not all liberals hate Mormons as there are liberal Mormons.)

It makes me sad that our Church is becoming more and more associated with partisan politics.
