I were a # of T-Shirts while out with a picture of Jesus and statement's under the picture [i have given out many a pass along card because of people asking me questions about my belief because of my shirts].I have had a # of people tell me that Jesus Christ and the people of that time period in the Bible did not have long hair.[ I am reminded of the Jehovah Witness portrayals/pictures of Jesus having short hair in there publication].Anything known of this ?, am curious. Thanks in advance.

No one has given a hair length for Jesus either in scripture or by revelation.

Did The Apostle John or Joseph Smith J.r make mention of it ?.

Joseph Smith said that Jesus had hair and it was white. Whether it was actual white or just so shiny it appeared white we don't know. That's about it.

While not necessarily a crew cut, the Greco-Roman world favoured shorter hair. Jews don't appear to have been the exception. None of the figural art we have is as early as Christ, but the Roman Catacombs and the Dura Europos frescoes should give you the general idea.

A famous but spurious description of Jesus Christ

Lentulus, the Governor of the Jerusalemites to the Roman Senate and People, greetings. There has appeared in our times, and there still lives, a man of great power (virtue), called Jesus Christ. The people call him prophet of truth; his disciples, son of God. He raises the dead, and heals infirmities. He is a man of medium size (statura procerus, mediocris et spectabilis); he has a venerable aspect, and his beholders can both fear and love him. His hair is of the colour of the ripe hazel-nut, straight down to the ears, but below the ears wavy and curled, with a bluish and bright reflection, flowing over his shoulders. It is parted in two on the top of the head, after the pattern of the Nazarenes. His brow is smooth and very cheerful with a face without wrinkle or spot, embellished by a slightly reddish complexion. His nose and mouth are faultless. His beard is abundant, of the colour of his hair, not long, but divided at the chin. His aspect is simple and mature, his eyes are changeable and bright. He is terrible in his reprimands, sweet and amiable in his admonitions, cheerful without loss of gravity. He was never known to laugh, but often to weep. His stature is straight, his hands and arms beautiful to behold. His conversation is grave, infrequent, and modest. He is the most beautiful among the children of men.

Volgadon, then the haircuts of the day were more like the Beatles type? Was the tradition of showing Christ with long hair and a beard arrived at because of a conflation between Nazareth and Nazarene ? Is there any evidence that Christ followed the Nazarene rules?

John the Baptist probably followed Nazarite rules and had long hair, and Jesus was associated with John's sect. But unlike John, Jesus was not a Nazarite or any kind of ascetic. Jesus partied and drank wine freely, and ate communal feasts with his disciples, and was willing to touch lepers, menstruating women, and the dead.

We might be able to infer that Jesus had a full beard and sidelocks, which is one possible interpretation of passages in Leviticus 19:27. At the very least, Jesus probably had sidelocks and sideburns, but probably sidelocks and a full beard.

Given Paul's statement about long hair for men in 1 Cor. 11:14, it seems reasonable to infer that other than the possible sidelocks, Jesus had short hair. Paul was raised in Jerusalem, and his life overlapped that of Jesus, so he would have been familiar with Jewish custom of the era, and according to that cultural outlook, long hair on men and short haircuts for women were considered shameful. Verse 7 also apparently implies that Jesus didn't wear a turban or scarf, because Paul considered head coverings on men to be shameful.

I don't think that any of the above catacombs paintings shed any light on what Jesus looked like. These are Roman Christians, who followed Roman custom. Jesus was a Jew from Galilee.

Jews in Palestine followed Greco-Roman fashons. The kind of clothing described in the talmuds, archaeoogical finds in the Judaean Desert and aristic remains, such as the Arch of Titus, all point to a lack of distinctive dress. Yigael Yadin wrote that the only difference seems to have been in the material, as Jews didd't use mixed textiles.

Very interesting. So technically, they were just ignoring biblical dress and grooming requirements?

Beatles, that isn't a bad way of putting it. Art history still hasn't shown all the origins of the classic, Byzantine iconography of Christ, but it is fascinating.

I don't quite understand what Paul was getting at when he said nature itself taught us that long hair for men was shameful. Because if a man doesn't get a trim for some weeks he's going to get long hair quite...ah...naturally.

Paul wasn't talking of what grew naturally, he was talking of masculine nature. In the Roman world, to let hair grow long was effeminate, an indication of homosexuality, of allowing one's self to be used like a woman. This was considered a disgrace, a man trying to play the role of a woman, a Roman form of hello, sailor.

I think that Garner Ted Armstrong once suggested that Jesus was a building contractor, a businessman, with is his hair cut short -- perhaps in Roman fashion.
