Log Posted April 25, 2012 Author Posted April 25, 2012 (edited) Log, do you take genre into consideration? Literally and Historically aren't always the same thing.Nor is what we consider literal what the ancient writers and audiences considered literal.I simply point out we have three other texts describing substantially the same events, none of which are plausibly linked to the Babylonian captivity of Israel - one of which is not plausibly linked to ancient writers and audiences. mfbukowski Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 Songbirds have certain genes which allow their brains and vocal equipment to learn and sing songs. The same genes control our speech.I don't know about teeth and claws, but I don't pretend to know how God did anything.
Log Posted April 25, 2012 Author Posted April 25, 2012 (edited) I don't know about teeth and claws, but I don't pretend to know how God did anything. But you do pretend to know he did something, and that's something! Anyhow, I removed that part of the post so as to not contribute to a massive derail, plus, I had a thought which means maybe I had best not address that topic here anymore. CV75 Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 (edited) Definitely so. An interesting question might be why history won't be precisely repeated - what will save the Church?Mosiah 27:13 indicates that the Church will remain established through the personal righteousness of the people in it. Those souls reserved for the latter days are capable of carrying this out. Edited April 25, 2012 by CV75 1
Damien the Leper Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 It makes a great deal of difference which philosophies of men are under consideration. To be learned is good, so long as the precepts conform to the revealed word of God.What precepts might that be? The LDS idea? The Reformed idea?Truth claims are claims and not justifiable fact.
Stargazer Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 Definitely so. An interesting question might be why history won't be precisely repeated - what will save the Church?A few decades ago I had a very short but interesting dream in which I found myself in a large room divided into two parts by one of those soft ropes you sometimes find in bank lines. There were round tables in the room, some of them occupied. I asked a table occupant on the other side of the rope divider from me, what was up with the room diviision, to which he disdainfully replied, "We're orthodox Mormons!" Implying, I guess, that I wasn't.Well, I still think that the earth wasn't created in six 24-hour periods, and that evolution is or was operative upon this earth. If this isn't orthodox enough, then oh, well.
Log Posted April 25, 2012 Author Posted April 25, 2012 (edited) Well, I still think that the earth wasn't created in six 24-hour periods, and that evolution is or was operative upon this earth. If this isn't orthodox enough, then oh, well.Heterodoxy is not the issue. Heteropraxy, in the form of discrediting the scriptures, doctrines, or Brethren, is a problem. However, what started me in thinking on this chain is that heterodoxy seems always to be a necessary, and not sufficient, precondition for heteropraxy. Would you agree with this observation? Or have I made a hasty generalization? Edited April 25, 2012 by Log
