blooit Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 I watched the episode on the History channel last night. Wow was it bad. They took semi-truths and twisted them almost beyond recognition. The biggest one was probably their failure to recognize the difference between the church, the members, and apostates. On this show they were all the same.It was very much like reading the enquirer. For example (to the best of my recognition):"Joseph Smith was well known to have been so attracted to the women around him that he instituted polygamy. He believed 'how could something that feels so right be so wrong.' His wife then demanded more husbands."Mormon or not, the twisting of the facts could only appeal to those with an axe to grind, and it was disappointing to see the History Channel present it as a documentary.Even worse for me are the uneducated members who watch it, and swallow it whole. Just today I had a member tell me, "Every church has it's skeletons. Quit complaining." How does anyone swallow this bunk?

Mormon-owned brothels and prostitutes getting the muckity-mucks entrapped. Woodruff buckling under the pressure. Mormon mob-owned casinos. The term "Lamanite" was more so the BOM's version of the Bible's "Gentile". It was more so a generic term to describe everyone else that wasn't Nephite. While there was a main group especially initially that was demeaned Lamanite, the term became more generic.Lie#3 - Lamanites cursed with dark skin.Actual Fact: Lamanites were AFTER the curse "marked" with a skin of darkness which was a "sign" of the Curse, not the actual curse.Further, a full reading of the book clearly indicates that the 'darkness' of the skin was most often in reference to their "countenances", not their actual skin color. However, both factors seems to have been in play, both a literal change in color (I like how the BOM Movie portray's it, throwing in intermarriage with more primitive tribes), and a change in their countenances, which in scriptural terms would in fact be their "skin". This sort of identification is common, including in the Bible which uses different types of designations to describe the same sort of thing.Lie#4 - Joseph achieved the rank of Master Mason.Actual Truth: While it is true that Joseph was "given" that ranking, he didn't "achieve" it. It was an honorary title given, similar to how people are given honorary degrees at colleges. Joseph didn't actually spend much time at all involved with Masonry, only to a periphery level and degree. To be fair, this is more of a minor misrepresentation, rather than a lie, but it needed to be addressed anyway.Lie#5 - Mormons raided right back at the non-mormons who raided them.Actual Truth: This one I can't quite remember. Gohan Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 I use to love watching History Channel as a kid, it's sad to see them go so far downhill. Pawn Stars/American Pickers is the only worthwhile thing on that channel these days, any good documentaries are rare in the extreme.

They forwarded lies as facts and smeared my faith. That should not be acceptable simply because others do it to. (If that makes sense.)

Or at least that's what I've learned from the History Channel's "history" of ancient peoples....

Could you please be specific how lie1 is infact a lie.Concerning.g the term lamanite. IIRC it was generic but generic to refer to all who were deemed unfriendly towards the Nephites, and Nephite was generic to all who were friendly towards lehi/nephi offspring. IIRC, the non-Mormon instigators were from other counties. A portion of those who had their homes destroyed and plundered were likely only guilty of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
