volgadon Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 I just watched a broadcast of London and Kirshenbaum, an Israeli current affairs show. Back in the 23rd of January they had a small segment with Tomer Persico on Mitt Romney and the Mormons. Tomer Persico is a professor of new age spirituality and religions, making a name for himself as a fairly high-profile commentator on religion in popular media.While I appreciate his attempts to be sympathetic towards us (which s more than can be said for his unfortunate blogpost on the same topic), he didn't come across as having done his homework.For example, Yaron London asked, "Mormons, that is not their official name, right?" Persico answered, giving the name of the church in English. "They are called the Church of Latter-day Saints." He then sloppily translated it into Hebrew as the Church of Later Saints, a mistake he has made fairly consistently. The Book of Mormon, apparetly, was upgraded Egyptian, dictated in its entirety to Emma Smith. Persico did comment on the remarkable translation process as perhaps pointing to actual divine assistance, but belied tat comment by his facial expressions and body language throughout the interview. He went on to say that about half of all Americans don't consider Mormons Christian and with good reason, theologically. He listed those reasons as belief in God's corporeality, and that Mormons will become gods with their own planets. He also seems to consider that the church hierarchy will dictate Romney's moves, but that the USA need not worry as Mormons are a conservative movement believing in family values. Alluding to the "Mormon Wll," Yaron London said, "Howard Hughes was Mormon, wasn't he? The aviation and movie mogul, he was Mormon. There were accusations that towards the end of his life a group of Mormons surrounded him, limited him and dictated his every move." Motti Kirshenbaum interjected that Hughes built up half of Las Vegas, s much for family values. It looked liked Persico had no clue one way or ther other, as he didn't correct that notion, or say that he was unsure, or indeed address it at all. What he did was to change he subject. He did, however, have positive things to say on Mormons as a proresive movement, and tied that that into "conquering their own planets" and personal, continual revelation. Interestingly enough, there was no mention of proxy ordinances or of the BYU Jerusalem Center. This is particlarly interesting as the Jerusalem Center is far from unknown, and even appears in Israeli guidebooks.So while nothing particularly terrible, this interview isn't particularly positive either and does little to further understanding.The whole thing is available online, beginning at the 40 minute mark. http://lnk.nana10.co.il/Article/?ArticleID=860255

cinepro Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 (edited) A few years ago (around the time Martin Scorcese's Howard Hughes movie "The Aviator" came out), there was an older gentleman in my ward who had been in Howard Hughes' "inner circle".
