Rick Santorum Aide: "Why Is Mormonism Off Limits?"

Just to complicate matters.... Marco Rubio was baptized a member of the church too.

He was considered (I don't think he will be now) a potential VP for Romney.... The family only attended for a couple of years (when Rubio was from 8 to 11) and then returned to their Catholic roots (he went through confirmation). Should it matter?

I have seen a picture of JFK in a home in the last couple of years. A Catholic lady almost 90 and a picture that must have been 60 years old. I am hoping to reply one of these days to Lehi on the relationship of church and state as it relates to Constantine over in the other forum. I know a little about Constantine; Jack Kennedy was no Constantine!

The last time I voted for President, it was for Paul in '88. Maybe I'll throw away a vote again in '12.

Although I prefer Nixon, and still do to either Jack or Bobby, I deeply regret losing them. Bobby was more serious about his faith than Jack. I think it would have informed his politics more easily. If they had lived, or if Bobby had lived alone, and won the nomination in '68, the Democratic Party potentially takes a much less anti-religious trajectory. Unlike baby brother, I can never see Bobby supporting abortion. Even though he would have been anti-abortion, thesometimesaint might still say Bobby was a good Catholic, as I would tend to do, although for completely different reasons. Bobby could STILL be alive at 87 years old. He liked to be called "Bob". Maybe it would have caught on by now. (sigh)

However he indulged himself in pleasures of the flesh, JFK seems to have risen to the occasion for the Cuban Missile Crisis. I have to respect and admire the Kennedys minus Edward. Of course there is blame for the Bay of Pigs, and he also reportedly used Cuba as a campaign issue against Nixon even after some secret plans that were in the works by the Eisenhower Administration for ousting Castro were made known to Kennedy. Nixon had to remain silent.

All these things considered, I would still vote for Constantine over JFK, Bobby, and prolly even 'ol Tricky ****...maybe I'll have more on the other thread this weekend. But I am thinking Ron Paul would be better for America than Constantine.

Because Santorum makes his religion a central part of his platform perhaps?

Precisely. Santorum keeps talking about his religious beliefs, but Romney does not. Of course people are talking more about Santorum's religion!

One thing that's not clear to me is why Santorum thinks the entire nation has to conform to conservative Catholic belief and practice. o_O

CFR that Santorum thinks the entire nation has to conform to conservative Catholic belief OR practice.

Santorum certainly does not believe everyone must conform to Catholic thought. He even stated as much when he expressed his view that birthcontrol was in his view wrong, but as policy it is what the nation needs and therefore he supports that policy.

Santorum can believe any silly thing he likes as long as he allows me to believe any silly thing I like. Further, we on this MB are constantly questioning each other how much we can disagree with our Churchs' stated positions and still consider ourselves good LDS. Politicans of whatever political stripe don't get a free ride.

I was putting myself in that bad Catholic category as well by that criteria

From my standpoint, Santorum is living his Catholic faith and will respect/allow others to do the same. He may not explain the finer points of the faith under the barrage of questions he takes on, but I seem to know his stance regardless so I'm comfortable with him as a candidate. Tonight's primaries are huge.

When we don't follow his guidance on issues of faith and morals.

The current health care bill proposed by Obama ABSOLUTELY crosses the line in regards to our moral conscience and needs to be challenged.

Once it's not a moral issue, we can still debate how much it really does help the poor. If you believe Santorum doesn't want to help the poor, you're missing the boat

At what point does publically disagreeing with the Pope make someome not a good Catholic?

During the formation of the Italian state, you could not be a good Catholic and a patriotic Italian. I think mileage varies throughout history.

The number of Catholic martyrs of that time period definitely increased.

That is but one reason I support the absolute separation of Church and State.

In a real world, I appreciate the importance but do not believe it's totally achievable. There's a quote in the LA Times of something that Santorum said

"I don't believe in an America where separation of church and state is absolute," he said.

To no surprise, this seems closer to reality for me.

The entanglement does not deal soley with how the government can influence the church, but how the church can influence the government (directly), for example, should the state of Utah be forced to pay tithes to the Church?
