freedom_of_religion Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 I have been asked by one of my in-laws why we still pay tithing, because Christ nullified the Old Laws in the New Testament. They told me that we are to just give what's in our heart and of our means. Since they are not LDS they do not accept the D&C commandment. So, my question is what Old Testament Laws are we still supposed to follow? What is the scriptural basis for that? The only one I can come up with so far is Mathew 5:17-19.
LeSellers Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 what Old Testament Laws are we still supposed to follow? What is the scriptural basis for that?Christ said He came to fulfill the Law (of Moses), not every law God (He, Himself) gave man since Eden. The Law of Tithing was instituted long prior to Moses. Abram, for instance, paid his tithes to Melchizedek, so we know that tithing, even though adapted and used in the Mosaic Law, was not fulfilled by Christ because it predated Sinai.Likewise, any law or commandment (Jews have identified six, but they are not authoritative on this) that was issued before Moses remains binding on us today because not fulfilled in Christ: those laws are for "the age" (of the earth). It is a good thing we have living prophets of God who can relay to us the current will of Him Who created and knows us. He gives us commandments for our benefit, not His, and if we ignore them, it is we who miss out on the associated blessings.Lehi
KevinG Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 ...we pay tithing because we like to worship in buildings with a roof and air conditioning. 1

Why do Christians not keep that, if your assertion is true?

Why do Christians not keep that, if your assertion is true?Do we have any information on what constituted "clean" and "unclean" meat (or anything else) outside the Law of Moses? Then, too, God has explicitly reversed that law anyway: all foods are clean now, according to scripture.Lehi
Mark Beesley Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 So, my question is what Old Testament Laws are we still supposed to follow? We are not supposed to follow any Old Testament laws. We are supposed to follow the laws as restored through the Prophet Joseph. Non-LDS are supposed to get themselves converted and baptized so they can follow those laws. I guess if I were advising non-LDS about how to live their life as non-LDS, I just refer them to the Ten Commandments and Christ's command to love one another.
Freedom Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 The "Mosaic law, including tithing, [was] terminated by the death of Jesus. Contributions are to be voluntary, not under compulsion.--2 Corinthians 9:7; Galatians 3:10-13, 24, 25; Ephesians 2:15). But D&C 64:23 declares, ‘Verily it is . . . a day for the tithing of my people; for he that is tithed shall not be burned at his [the Lord's] coming).'" We see no conflict here. Tithing in the LDS Church is voluntary. But the Lord does command that we pay a tithe, just as he commanded in ancient times. Through the prophet Malachi, he promised blessings from heaven for tithe payers and said that he would "rebuke the devourer . . . and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground" (Malachi 3:10-11). Even in the early Christian church, we read of a man and his wife whom the Lord slew because they did not give all that they had promised, "and great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things" (Acts 5:1-11).From 'Response to Jehovah's Witness Articles on the LDS Church by John A. Jesus, until his death continued to keep the Mosaic Law and even after his death his followers kept the law. Today we have different revelations and laws to follow. Many of the laws of Moses are still being followed by current LDS, but in a modified manner befitting the criteria set down by Jesus in modifiying the laws not doing away entirely with them.
Freedom Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Many of the laws were expanded. I think a good comparison is with the Aaronic and Melchizedek priesthood. One encompasses all of the other. Sacrificing animals was replaced with sacrificing a broken heart and a contrite spirit. In other words, the the earlier law was no longer sufficient. It was added upon rather than replaced with something new. Here is an article that explains it well. http://lds.org/ensign/1983/09/the-law-after-christ?lang=eng&query=law+moses

LeSellers Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Where?!? And please, don't give me Peter's vision...Why not? You ask for an answer and preemptively reject it (or, at least one).On the other hand, Luke, Paul, and Apollos make the case in Acts, Romans, Thessalonians, Timothy, Hebrews, and others. I'm sure you read the New Testament at some point in your life, so it seems you missed a few important passages. Lehi

BCSpace Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 What Old Testament Laws Were Nullified?Perhaps the argument could be made that it is none of them (Matthew 5:18). We don't obey most of them because they have been superceeded. Matthew 5:21-22 for example. In other words, the Law of Moses is a subset of the whole Gospel law. 1
volgadon Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 What Old Testament laws were nullified? Loving God and loving your neighbour, obviously.
