KevinG Posted December 23, 2011 Posted December 23, 2011 Mariner:I have nothing against science, or even differing opinions as to what it all means. However claiming we know much of anything is profoundly silly. It is like the thimbles' worth of knowledge compared with the vast oceans of our ignorance."When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong." -Arthur C Clarke http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarke%27s_three_lawsYou hit the trifecta!
zeez Posted December 23, 2011 Posted December 23, 2011 God is much more interesting when we consider him a being that is subject to all the powers of nature.

mnn727 Posted December 23, 2011 Posted December 23, 2011 The story of Moroni appearing in Joseph Smith always sounded like a programmed Hologram to me.But then I am a big SciFi fan
Monster Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 Not sure you can take things of faith and try to put them in the box called science. There is no verifiable evidence that Jesus or any other being did any of the things stated. The simplest answer is they did not. Believing in God or Jesus is simply that a belief. I would not try to understand their operations with known science. The two simply do not mix.

I would not try to understand their operations with known science. The two simply do not mix.One could say that there is no verifiable evidence that the universe, due to the horizon problem, can be homogeneous. We observe the homogeneity of the universe, just as the early disciples witnessed the miracles of Jesus. It is the job of science to take these observations and resolve how they occur. There are many observable phenomena that defies our current understanding of the universe. To simply dismiss them by saying they do not exist because they don't mix with science is, well, bad science. I understand that there are things we take on faith, but we take them on faith because the science has not been discovered yet. Most conflicts, however, are not with the events but rather with our interpretations of the events.
BCSpace Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 In the Scriptures Jesus (even while mortal) “disappeared from a mob”, after his resurrection he just appeared to his Apostles. As “flesh and bone” he ascended into heaven. A previous post spoke of the size of the universe. Other stars are hundreds of light years from us…Joseph Smith said that before Moroni appeared a conduit of light preceded him. Elijah (which while reading this made me think of this topic) was taken into heaven by what is described as a “Chariot of Fire’. Unless heaven is very close, this would require one to travel faster than light…squared a thousand times.I have a serious question; would it diminish your view of God, if modes of travel; appearing and disappearing were done by means other than supernatural? My son once asked me how Christ was able to just “appear” or “walk though walls” when he appeared to his Apostles. I told him “because he knew how”It is theoretically possible for all the atoms in one's body to simultaneously jump two feet to the left. Perhaps the Gods have figured out how to increase and control the probability of it as a means of escaping the grasp of mortals? Perhaps Jesus merely ascended 100 meters using an anti gravity field into an invisible spaceship? I don't believe that anything is "supernatural", I believe there is always going to be a scientific explanation for how something was done and I would indeed be curious to find out how these things were done.
orion88 Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 All is governed by natural laws, even God. He did not create the laws. He could not have created them, they exited before he was a God.Can you be more specific? Which God are you referring to?

There may be others that are called gods, but to us there is only one, and He has been and will be our God forever. If you choose not to believe the words of Paul, that's up to you.

God the Father, in my understanding, is governed by laws. Although it is not stated outright in scripture, the church does not discount the claim 'as man is God once was, as God is, man may become'. So our God, the Eternal Father and the only God we worship, is governed by laws because God is a God of order.

You fail to provide any kind of reasonable or logical response, but continue to make the same claim, nonetheless. So, once again: if you believe that your God is governed by the laws of nature, how is it you also believe that your God violates these laws pretty much continually? While there is a long history or reported violations of the laws of nature by God as taught in Mormonism, let's focus on one that is ironclad. And that is the violation of special relativity every time a visitation is made to Earth by a heavenly being who arrives lass than 4 years or so fater this heavenly being leaves Kolob, or every time a prayer is answered in less than several years from the time it is offered. It would really be great if you could provide some kind of logical or reasonable answer to this question.
