Jesterss Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 Where do you think this evolved from?http://en.wikipedia....holic_Church%29Are you a member of the catholic and lds church? Quite an anomaly if so.
shalamabobbi Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 Huh? He says that he appointed them. It does not give any mentioning to being ordained as receiving the priesthood.1 Peter 2:9http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Peter+2%3A9&version=KJV
Jesterss Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 1 Peter 2:9http://www.biblegate...3A9&version=KJVTo God’s elect, exiles scattered throughout the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia, 2 who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to be obedient to Jesus Christ and sprinkled with his blood:Recognize who this is directed to? Not just apostles or disciples. This is to all people. We all hold the royal priesthood. Your notion of the priesthood (or should I say LDS), is that only certain people hold the priesthood as it was in the OT. My point is that it's not that way anymore. We are all able to go through Jesus Christ, to reach God. 1

Calm Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 Are you a member of the catholic and lds church? Quite an anomaly if so.I think it was more to point out that as far as we can tell, from the earliest time it was assumed by most Christians that a Priesthood was still in play...

Bill “Papa” Lee Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 But you didn't respond with a reference, you said that you know it for a fact. Nothing wrong with your belief. But your belief or interpretation does not make it factual when discussing what is written. Is it? Last I checked an apostle meant a messenger. Not someone who was worthy of entering into the holy of holies before Jesus died.My commit (I believe) was “I know for a fact it was taught here in the South” (too paraphrase). If you need a reference; MT Zion Baptist Church (which I witnessed them asking on black man who showed up on Sunday to leave; Autry Baptist Church and Emerson 1st Baptist Church. I was recently watching “True Grit” on my ipod, there is an line in the movie where Maddy Ross stated, “How could you not remember a man with black place on his face like banished Cain. Do you believe that came from Mormon teaching? No they got it from the book and attitudes of the day back in the 60’s. I know many who would like to lay this issue solely at the feet of Mormons but you cannot.

Jesterss Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 (edited) An angel is a messenger. Apostle means "one sent forth".Could you clarify something for me...I'm not quite sure what your belief is...was the priesthood abandoned? or does everyone have access to it?What are your thoughts on Hebrews 5, where it talks about priesthood holders must be called of God as Aaron was? What do you believe the "priesthood" is?Great question. And Hebrews 5 is very tricky if you don't continue to read everything in Hebrews.Hebrews 7 sheds the most light on the priesthood. As well as what comes before Hebrews 5 in Hebrews 4.Hebrews 7:26-28 26 Such a high priest truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. 27 Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. 28 For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever.Men have weakness and the law governs them. Do we not know that the law was abandoned when Jesus died for all sins? Jesus is the high priest, he continually lives, and because of this, he can always forgive us of our transgressions.Hebrews 7:23-25 23 Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; 24 but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. 25 Therefore he is able to save completely[c] those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.Keep 23-25 in mind when reading 26-28... Hebrews 5 is teaching us the leading up to Jesus' all importance as the sole priesthood authority. He lives, men die.Hebrews 4:14-16 14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven,[f]Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.Jesus is our High Priest. We don't need anyone else.Edit: in answering your question, the priesthood was not abandoned, because we know Jesus is The High Priest, so therefore he holds the priesthood, but he alone sits above us all to prepare the way to God for us. As far as levites and such, they were governed by the law, and the law was abandoned. therefore, we as followers of christ do not hold the priesthood or receive tithes, we are to pay our tithes to Jesus, to live righteous by him in the path he set for us. That's what I believe. Edited October 12, 2011 by Jesterss
Jesterss Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 I see. Peter received the keys of appointment(s). Would that be like a day calendar?Again, you are expanding upon the idea of him being appointed a teacher to the idea that the keys made him part of the priesthood. This is not one and the same. And they do not mix. The bible implies that Jesus appointed his disciples to teach the word, and peter was given the keys to bind and loose on earth. This does not say he had the priesthood such as any displayed by the levites or aaronites. Isaiah 66:21,22 (Uh oh)What is going on in this chapter? The mount of transfiguration must be a mystery as well..How does this compare to anything about the priesthood? Moses and Elijah appeared with Jesus and they spoke to one another. Jesus' appearance changed during this time. Peter saw it. Where then are you drawing upon a priesthood idea?
Jesterss Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 My commit (I believe) was “I know for a fact it was taught here in the South” (too paraphrase). I know many who would like to lay this issue solely at the feet of Mormons but you cannot.I didn't argue that fact. And I don't think that teaching came solely from mormons. It was a commonly held belief. I only raised the question of you saying you know for a fact that the priesthood was passed on to other individuals.
altersteve Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 Jesterss, there's nothing in Hebrews, or the entire Bible for that matter, that even suggests that the priesthood was abandoned.http://en.fairmormon.org/Mormonism_and_priesthood
wenglund Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 Jesus is our High Priest. We don't need anyone else.I can see how that works for how you believe. However, it doesn't work so well for how we believe. We view Christs as the great High Priest, but we believe he has told us, through revelation and through ordinations at the hands of heavenly messengers, that since he is in heaven, he needs duly authorized and ordained men on earth to, under his direction, manage the affairs of his earthly kingdom. He, who is in heaven, needs men on earth who can bind on earth in such a way that it will be bound in heaven. To each their own. Thanks, -Wade Englund-
altersteve Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 Again, you are expanding upon the idea of him being appointed a teacher to the idea that the keys made him part of the priesthood. This is not one and the same. And they do not mix. The bible implies that Jesus appointed his disciples to teach the word, and peter was given the keys to bind and loose on earth. This does not say he had the priesthood such as any displayed by the levites or aaronites. If someone has the keys of the kingdom, then he has the priesthood. They are in fact one and the same.
Jesterss Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 Jesterss, there's nothing in Hebrews, or the entire Bible for that matter, that even suggests that the priesthood was abandoned.http://en.fairmormon..._and_priesthoodHebrews states that the law was abandoned. And also in Hebrews, it states how the law governed priests. So therefore, that connection can be made. You just wish to not make that connection based on your new revelation of JS.
Jesterss Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 If someone has the keys of the kingdom, then he has the priesthood. They are in fact one and the same. No, your belief system makes them one and the same. The bible does not. Your revelation does not change what the bible says, only adds to it.
altersteve Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 Hebrews states that the law was abandoned. And also in Hebrews, it states how the law governed priests. So therefore, that connection can be made. You just wish to not make that connection based on your new revelation of JS.It says that the law of Moses was abandoned, but it also says that Christ brought a higher law, which includes a higher priesthood. This priesthood is today known as the Melchizedek priesthood, and it includes all the duties and functions of the Aaronic, or lesser, priesthood. Did you even read the link I showed you?
Jesterss Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 I can see how that works for how you believe.Definitely, just as I can see how it works for you based off the BOM additions. He, who is in heaven, needs men on earth who can bind on earth in such a way that it will be bound in heaven.Would agree to disagree to a certain degree. I agree that Jesus gives us teachers and apostles but I do not believe they necessitate a priesthood. The Word of Jesus is what is binding to me. Not any ordinances performed. To each their own. Most definitely. Sometimes through each owns interpretations we can understand different meanings from the many parables.
